Currently, I am using the free version of Avira Antivir.
I was wondering if any of the other 2 are better (Avast! or AVG)?
I know that NOD32 and Kaspersky are the best, but I want to know the free alternative![]()

I don't care what anyone says if you are using freeware, it is free because they leave out at least something. I get Kaspersky Internet Security and that's all I need. You can get two, three or more freeware and maybe come up to the same coverage but then you're using more resources. To each his own I guess, but I'd definitely give Kaspersky the nod.

Avast has a weird media-player-like interface that just puts me off. You can use AVG free, which I do, or just disable the nags.
Hope it helps. -
AVG's good for me.
-
I like AVG because of its ease of use.
As for Avast, ugh, that media player thing is just annoying. Im trying to scan my computer for Pete's sake, not play an MP3 -
i use avast and it works great, works better than avg from when i used it.

I use a hardware firewall and Avira's free version.
-
I use AVG, it uses less system resources, good for gamers
and its free. Nod32 is the best, they update their definitions up to 8 times a day, what other anti-virus does that? I have used Avast in the past, it had too much "junk" to it, I look for a lean yet effective anti-virus, AVG Free is free because they make their money with corporate accounts, I do not see where they slack in any way. Stay off the game crack sites, and bad torret sites, you'll be fine
-
The best right now(not free) are Bitdefender, Kaspersky, Norton. I've always used kaspersky, so i couldn't comment on the other ones. You can always try it for free for a month, i'd say give it a go. Then, if you like it, you could buy it.

I use avast, I don't scan the system that often that the interface bothers me.

AVG 8 FREE edition

Avast + Spybot

Avira and Spybot w/ teatimer, I couldn't stand AVG 8, made browsing network resources way too slow and wanted to install way too much interwebs browser monitoring crap.

Thanks for the link though i'll re-read your guide to see if anything intrests me
My Firewall blocks pretty much anything and i always scan everything i download before opening it. In the hundreds of Gigs of materials i have downloaded i have never ran into a problem.
(i would give you a bit of rep for that... but i have to rep 42,897,453 people over the next 74 years before i can rep you again) -

AVG free with resident shield disabled.

norton 2009 is actually very light compared to previous nortons, and has a great detection rate
Im using Kaspersky Internet Security 8.0 that i got 3 user copy for free after rebate. -
I have used Avast on my computers since 2006 and have not had a problem yet, I also use Spybot with Teatimer disabled.
Has anyone that uses Spybot disable Windows Defender? -
-
eset smart security

I've used Avast for a long time. Once it caught a file i had downloaded in a huge group of files. Took care of it quickly. Also, at the time when I first used it, I was looking for a 64 bit compatible free antivirus. Avast was the only one I found at that time. I'm sure others are 64 bit now too. Avast has been good to me. Just re-register it once a year.
-
I use Webroot AntiVirus/Spysweeper along with Comodo firewall (free).
-
I used to have AVG free but it's too slow it checks everything whenever I want to do something. Haven't used Kaspersky but heard it's good. My best experience is Symantec Antivirus (not Norton suites). Now they have Symantec Endpoint Protection. Very light, fast, easy to update, new viruses updated every couple of days, always detects anything strange and knows when to do it (unlike AVG). Very happy with the product.
I use Corporate version of my company so it's free and doesn't have a license key/check.
I have tried other products such as webroot, Avast, NOD32... but so far they are either too slow or ineffective... -
avast and avg free are...ok (but not on my notebook)
avira free is it.
if you pay go esset... or norton9 (cant believe i am typing this).
and malwares malabyte scan from time to time. -
NOD32 and Spysweeper
-
I use Kaspersky and it works lovely.
-
Kaspersky is quite secure, but it's kind of a... paranoid fortress - huge resource hog, but quick scanning technology. Eset, famous for its low resource usage, has been slipping these years, it's not a very strong AV/firewall, and it scans quite slow.
I've used all these in the period of a year (so same generation of AV software), and have used each for at least a month. The clear winner after comparing these antivirus software is Norton 2009 (additonally, I'm using their "Gamer's Edition," which provides some useful extra features). -
-
Honestly, I don't use a thing other than Spybot Immunizations (even on my internet facing WoW server), and haven't had an issue with a virus in about 3 years.
I have heard that Norton Internet Security 2009 (as noted above) has been rewritten from the ground up. Maximum PC actually gave it a Kick "GAS" rating because of the extensive changes. -
I just installed Norton Antivirus 2009, I must say, I like it so far.
-
Trend Internet Security Pro 2009.
-
Is Norton 2009 the same as the norton 360 that comes with the 7805u?
thanks ,I am trying to figure out what all is bloatware some I can tell some I dont know > -
-
I use ThreatFire 4.0, yes its slow and paranoid at everything you do, however I am a software engineer by trade and don't feel like losing my work, family photos, heck even having my computer blown apart by some idiots warez virus.
TF Doesn't use much resources, less of a nag then some of the others I tried, norton, Nod, Trend and AVG all used more resources then TF and all caught viruses just as fast.
/Base his Anti-virus on which program can get the job done, with least amount of resources
//Used AVG and must say - excellent program for free, but sometimes an annoying hog in resources, will do what you want to do for free, and do as good as norton, kapersky and Trend -
if you have 1-2gigs of ram you should be fine(most people have these days).
-
-
)
when i game, i turn everything off, including internet. When i don't game, i don't care too much about my resources, as long as i stay protected -

I hear you, for most of us on the site, we not need to even run a anti virus, but it is beeter to have it then try to remove antivirus 9000 <---- ouch!
-
Eset Nod32 - Always Used It and great!
-
More thumbs up for Norton 2009. Never been a Norton fan due to bloated code, but the completely re-written 2009 version is not only light and fast, it does an excellent job of finding and removing threats, both virus and spyware.
Just forget whatever you've heard about Norton in the past...this year, 2009 is the year of CHANGE! -
just removed kaspersky technical review from my win 7 install.
flynnaz i dig you. took out all the fun of win7 snappiness.
now with eset nod32 beta 4 and all is back to normal. -
-
then use that beta 4 its free
