They both have the same features except one and that's the LCD screen. I plan on buying one of these laptops this week. Should I buy the 7811 FX (refurbished, ebay) because it will have the WUXGA screen or the 7805u because it doesn't have the heat issue that affected the 7811 FX?
7811 FX
Pro: 1920x1200 (which I really want), $150 Cheaper
Con: Heat Issues
7805u
Pro: Stable, well received, Brand New
Con: Gateway throws out the 1200p screen (only sold in the first batch)
I really would like the 1200p lcd but I'm afraid that I might get one with a heat issue, which would mean that I would have to deal with Gateway support. The refurbished one is under a 3 month warranty.

I'd say go with the 7805u if you want the laptop to last. And you can also get the 1 year warrenty....ebay...yeah >_> And you might get lucky with 1920x1200 screen.

Thats always an option too, (its the 1920x1200 version of the P-7805u) but its $300 more than the 7811 and $150 more than the P7805u.
Up to you really. -
Some people are still reporting that they are finding the 7805u's with 1920 x 1200 screens.
-
i just bought one today, and i got the smaller res screen, and they checked for the bigger res for me too.
-
I'm leaning towards the 7811 fx now even though it is refurbished and was plagued with heat issues. Should I bother checking my local Best Buy to see if they might have a 1920x1200 version of the 7805u?

I bought mine from ebay (refurbished)and works good. no problems at all.
Even my T9600 cpu was bought from ebay also. -
I've decided on buying a refurbished 7811 FX. Thanks for all your feedback.

In-case you didn't buy it yet, let me try to sway you or at least give you more info:
Things i like:
-I can run all my games at high settings. source games are a breeze at everything set to high. Every other game i've ever loaded runs games at very high or highest settings, except crysis, but crysis still plays ok.
-I love the look and the 1920x1200 res
-surprisingly, 99% of my 32-bit programs work fine.
-long batterly life
Things i don't like:
-small 200gb hd, but you can upgrade cheaply
-they put the fn key where the ctrl key should be...Seems like it would be a realatively minor thing, but this drives me crazy more than i can tell you. Every computer i've ever owned had the ctrl key in the same place except this one... very hard to unlearn what you have learned...
-keyboard sucks. at first i thought i would be great to have a numeric keyboard, ubt it isn't for 3 major reasons:
1. to fit, they shrink down other some of the other keys.
2. adding the num keyboard makes your position in front of the laptop off-center... very disconcerting.
3. i never ever ever ever ever use the numeric keyboard.
-"hanging" glitch: for no reason at all, whether you're gaming or web browsing, or just listening to music, the machine freezes and hangs for like 3 seconds. if you're listening to audio, it sounds like the Matrix movie, when neo is getting sucked out into the real world: "BLRRRRAAHHHALALALALALALAL." no fixes i've tried have solved this problem, and i'm about to return the thing.
-external speakers blow. they would have been better off saving space and putting in extra fans or heatsinks and forced you to buy external speakers... because you'll never listen to sound on this machine without them or headpones.
-excessive heat . one plus to this is i herd a guy mention he can put his coffee cup by the vent and keep his java hot for hours! = ) (he's not exagerating... this thing gets hot when you do any gaming at all.
-too big, and way too heavy. my next machine will be a 15.4 inc screen.
that's it. if you don't mind the issues, it's a great performing machine, and maybe you'll get lucky, and your machine wont have the heat issues and hanging glitch... (not all people that have this machine report those problems) -
Go to you
Power options > Change when computer sleeps > Change Advanced settings > Press the + sign next to Hard Disk > Press the + next to "Turn hard disk off after" > Set them to "Never" > apply > OK. -
Thanks for the info, CaptainTerror.

You're welcome = ) (let us know how you fare if you choose the 7811!)
semi-gamer: Thanks I'll try that now. -
Consider also the 7801u sold by JR.com for $1249. It's basically the 7805u with the WXUGA 1900 x 1200 screen. Usually, there won't be any sales tax so you come about the same as purchasing through BestBuy with tax.

i just did a clean install, and haven't had time to do any heavy-duty testing (i'm repping you regardless), but i'll let you know! I passed on your suggestion about the HDD's settings to another user (ScotchIrishPrince), in this thread:
7811 Defective
You might also want to pass along your suggestion to the blokes in this thread(i don't remember seeing your suggestion about the the HDD's settings in there):

Which one to buy: 7805u FX or 7811 FX?
