We all know that 3dmark is the preferred benchmarking tool for graphics. But when it comes to cpu, is there a preferred benchmarking tool that really pushes the cpu for more than a few seconds (like superpi). Something that stresses the cpu for a little while is good.

In my experience, AOL software can be a pretty major CPU stressor :p .

Folding @ home is a great program for really stressing the CPU. Plus, you can feel good about helping to cure disease :D

There is only one utility that really stresses your CPU - Intel Linpack.

    :D

Linpack is the devil and while good for stress testing it serves no real purpose except to set your lap on fire or start nuclear chain reactions with CPU's

Orthros is the simplest and IMO best one to use.

You will never find a real world app that will ever get your CPU any hotter than what orthros maxes it out to.

If your just wanting to see how far you can drag down your system you can encode HD video while converting a DIVX movie and try to photoshop something at the same time. Your system should crawl by that point

Well the main reason I asked for something that stresses the cpu is because I bought an engineering sample cpu off ebay and since I supposedly cannot monitor temps, I'd just like to stress it and make sure the computer doesn't crash or anything.

On a side note, the bios can see the temp of the cpu right no matter what? Regardless if vista can see it or not?

    not our BIOS... they suck.

Have you tried HWMoniter? I have an ES x9000 in my 6860 and i get temp readings easily. To not have temp sensors you would have had to have the first run ES chips and those are pretty rare that i've seen.

Yeap, it appears my sample has no temp sensor. Is there anything I can use to stress it to the point where it would bsod under normal conditions (supposing the fan doesn't work since the computer can't see the temp)?

I can't post a link so just google "orthos" and it's the first link.

I have an x7800 ES and under full load my temps hit 77. Never bsods or anything.

This is also using the infinite coolermaster cooler on full. Before using the cooler I'd get really hot and in doing so the system would just shut down and restart.
