Does anyone know if the MT6705 (T2060 1.6GHz Intel GMA 950) will run Aero? I spoke to a Gateway tech and he said it will not...I'm hoping someone can either confirm this or tell me it will run it.

If the GPU is DX9.0C (not sure about C, but I'm sure about the 9.0) with at least 64 or 128 MB assigned, then it can certainly run Aero.

Well, I just checked the handy dandy sticky posted in the Gaming and Graphics Cards forum here....it says that the integrated 950 *will* run Aero. So I think I'll believe what I read here versus what the Gateway tech told me. ;)

Just make sure you get at least 1GB or more of RAM to run Aero...preferably as much more as you can get as well.

I orgered 2 gigs of ram ($90 from ZipZoomFly) , it gets in tommorrow. I can't wait to see how it runs with the extra memory. I didn't buy the machine for games, however I did put a few on it and tested it out. It ran Battlefield Vietnam multiplayer online very well, granted thats an older game but still I was impressed by how well it handled it. I ran my 3D CAD software on it and it handles it quite well, unless I load up a larger drawing, but even my desktop has to slightly flex its pinkyfinger to run those. I really think the 2 gigs will bring a lot more performance to the little guy.

I'm more impressed with the machine the longer I have it. So far it has far exceeded my expectations for what a $599 laptop can do, and while I was very skeptical of Vista it has so far ran perfect for me, and I'm even kinda starting to like Vista

Well, so far so good for me as well, although I only got it yesterday. Still, I spent the entire day and evening putting it through it's paces. Deleted most of the "extras" that I didn't want...it comes in at a "Windows Experience" level of 3.0 - not too shabby for a $599 laptop which is *almost* as budget as you can go.

I *can* run Aero as well...so much for the tech telling me I couldn't run it. The only thing I am disappointed with is the screen brightness when I take it outside. Just too dim for comfortable outdoor use...well, at least when I'm in the sun like I am now, lol.

I'll be ordering the memory today as well. If you know which exactly you ordered could you post it please? I just don't want to order the wrong thing although I'm pretty sure I know what to get. I too can't wait to see how this machine works with the 2GBs in it. Really, as long as this machine holds up, I can't imagine anyone not being satisfied with it for the price and for doing the standard internet and wp functions. :)

ETA: Surprisingly, I think I am liking Vista as well. Too many tool bars on top but I hope to change it around today if I can. Still, better than I thought it would be.

Installed the extra RAM, definite improvement. My intensive 3D drawings are actually movable now, and I can actually use this machine to do more intricate drawings than the simple ones I purchased it to draw. Everything else runs much smoother as well. Definitly I would recommend upgrading to 2 gigs.

    Hey,

I just purchased the MT6705 for $649.99 at Best Buy. I was wondering if you could give me a status update in terms of how the 2 Gigs of RAM improved your Vista experience? I think Aero and everything runs fine, but it seems a little slower in opening windows (Documents, IE, etc.) than it would if I installed XP on it. Honesty, I just need a notebook for word processing and the Internet. I bought this one because I like Gateway's quality and because it's so cheap. I was thinking of reformatting and doing a clean install of XP Pro because I know that the performance would be a lot better and there really isn't anything in Vista that is compelling enough for me to keep it (except for maybe Aero). Any thoughts on this?

    Thanks,
    James

I got the 2GB installed (bought from NewEgg for about $41 per GB.) It is an improvement but not what I would call a *dramatic* one. I think things just move along a little faster with the two vs. the one. Nice to add, but not a huge deal, IMO, for what you're doing. I just feel like the extra memory gives a little breathing room, if that makes any sense? I can't speak to switching to XP since I'm keeping the Vista. A nice machine though for what we all paid.

    Hey,

I agree, it is a great machine! Highly recommended! I think today is the last day you can buy it at Best Buy for $649.99 as well. I let it charge for 24 hours before I turned it on. I set up Vista, and made a recovery DVD from the Recovery partition. I then used the Gateway Vista DVD to reinstall a clean copy of Vista after deleting all the partitions (including the recovery partition). I created two partitions and installed Vista on the first (C :) partition which is 49.8 GB in size. After installing Vista and my programs (Office, Itunes, AIM, AVG), there is 38.8 GB free. The second partition is 61.9 GB in size (the remainder of the HD). This is where I place all my files and music. I'm in the process of ripping my CDs to the HD in uncompressed WAV format. By the time I'm done, there will be about 35 GB free on this partition. Originally, I thought about installing XP on this computer, but I'm actually very impressed with the system speed and performance after performing a clean install of Vista and concurrently removing all of Best Buy/Gateway's bloatware.

I really like this computer, as far as both looks and performance are concerned. I would highly recommend this sytem to anyone on the fence. In case anyone wants to know, my desktop is a Micron Millenia that was purchased in June of 2000. The Gateway MT6705 is now the second computer I've ever purchased. The Micron is made of the following components: a Pentium III processor, a 120 GB 7200 RPM HD, a Diamond ATI Radeon 9250 graphics card, two NEC ND3550A DVD +/- DL RW optical drives, 512 MB of Mushkin PC100 memory. Of course, the computer did not come like this, but I recently upgraded several components a few months ago. It runs Windows XP Pro SP2 like a dream. Interestingly, I tried intalling Vista Home Basic on my desktop, but the performance was horrible. I'm guessing that it's the processor holding it back--perhaps the memory as well.

SportsC, I'm curious as to how your Vista rating improved with the additional 1 GB of RAM? Any information would be greatly appreciated. Congrats to everyone who purchased this system!

Do you mean that Windows Experience Index? (I think that's what it's called.) Actually, it didn't bump me up at all. :( I was hoping for a little higher but it stayed at 3.0. I'm guessing this is the rating everyone with this machine has? No tweaks out there to make it rate any higher?

I popped in a DVD to try it out the first day I had the machine...and the memory was pushing around 90% usage with a few other apps and browsers open. After putting in the 2GB it stays in the green zone in the mid-50% usage range. Oh, and just a note on DVDs - Jurassic Park was what I popped in there to try the player out the first day. I just put it in again to see where the memory usage was now with the 2 GB - and the DVD started at the same place I stopped it last time. Maybe this isn't news to anyone but I didn't know the player would "remember" where I stopped the DVD. Kinda neat.

Well, the Vista Experience rating is based on your lowest score. For our machine, the gaming graphics subscore is the lowest score (3), so our overall rating is a 3. It doesn't average the numbers to arrive at the overall score. I'm assuming that your memory subscore improved. I was wondering what it went up to. The score for that on my 1 GB machine is 4.5. If we wanted our machine to improve in the overall score we would have to have a better GPU.

Yeah, but I was hoping *maybe* something would have bumped up higher....you know, magic and all. ;) Seriously though, I believe even my memory score stayed the same, which surprised me. It still runs faster with the extra gig in it though irregardless of the score.

    Hey,

I just bought a Gateway MT6705 Notebook from Bestbuy last week. It runs perfectly for everything that I need it for. (3d Gaming, Disney's Toontown online for my kids, Document Editing, Surfing the internet, Sharing files between computers, etc.) Great Wireless, fast connections. It Runs the Aero Interface perfectly. I'm very happy with the quality of this notebook.

    5 out of 5 stars.

    Hey SportC...

Exactly which memory did you get from Newegg?

I'm going to get this laptop for my spouse-unit for her Birthday, and i want to go ahead and get the memory.

    thanks..

At 600 bucks I oughta buy me one too, i've got an antiquated E-machine that has a cracked hinge problem..

Laptops only have about a 3 year life expectancy, i could get two of these for what I paid for my e-machine...

Well what am I doing wrong? I have the 1G MT6705. Why won't Aero run? It is set at 32 bit color, monitor at 60hz,theme at vista. but when I try to set the window color and apperance to aero the screen turns gray, then comes back to normal. It appears it is changing the setting. When I go back in, it is set on vista basic again. it just won't take.

Maybe you have a defective computer? Double check to make sure your RAM is 1GB. My parents bought a computer 6 years ago that had defective RAM. I'm using the MT6705 as we speak with Aero. You shouldn't have any problems.
