I just got a 6822 Gateway Notebook and every now and than the HD will click. After reading through some posts I realized that it's the power save feature kicking in. And after pushing my Power Options to the limits its still happening.

So I checked my HD driver and it's from 2006. Will updating it to the newest one (supposed to have Vista support) stop this clicking?

Your hard drive has a driver?

Also, those "power options" have nothing to do with the hard drive...try notebook hardware control, it has a tab for hard drive performance.

The info in Device Manager says that it has a driver and gives a bunch of details about it.

I was going to try NHC, but first I wanted to see if I can resolve the issue without extra software :)

Well, unless you physically take the hard drive apart and fix the defect inside, you will have to rely on some sort of Windows software to fix it right?

The clicking only happens when it's idle or when the computer starts up, is that a defect?

You should try contacting Gateway support, see what they say about it.

But if it's noticeable enough for it to get on your nerves, I say it's a defect.

Check to see if there is a firmware update or the HD. Yes hard drives have firmware.
