My wife has a Gateway P-6860FX which has finally died to heat issues. I'm wondering if a 7805u or 7908u motherboard can be transplanted into that chassis without issue. Does anybody know? Same question for my 7805u, could the 7908u mobo be put into it's chassis?

P 7805 to P79 is of no issues otherr than drivers and widows activation. P68 to P78 or P79 is an issue with the media bar and particularly the power button. There is another thread on that one...............

Indeed, this is correct info and I am in the middle of a P-79 board swap into a P-68 chassis. The only real difference, hardware wise that presents a challenge, is the power button setup. It will work without it but I will be purchasing a P-78/P-79 media bar set up. The ribbon cable looks identical FYI.

I recently replaced my broken p-7801u chassis with a p7915 chassis I bought off eBay. Works flawlessly, and well worth the hassle.

If I'm not mistaken, most of the boards I've seen for sale already have the GPU soldered in, leaving me to find a cpu, memory, and heat piping. Is that correct? Also where do I get the heat piping? Is it available from some of the same part vendors?

The CPU and heatsinks are fully compatible unless there was a socket M motherboard revision.

The RAM might be a change from ddr2 ddr3.
