I purchased a Gateway 4530gz a couple months ago from Office Depot on clearance for my girlfriend. The computer is great and everything, but recently I noticed a small crack on the hinge. I am aware of the cracked hinge problems with Gateway/Emachines notebooks, so I was waiting for it. I tell my girlfriend to be gentle opening and closing it, but she's pretty rough with it. Luckily the crack is very small and hasn't gotten bigger yet. What should I do? If I send it in for repair do they replace the entire screen part? Will Gateway give me a hard time about fixing it? I have the standard 1 year manufacturers warranty, so I'm assuming it shouldn't be a problem, am I wrong? How long does it usually take to get it fixed? Should I put crazy glue on it to prevent it from spreading? Will that work? I actually have a crack sealant for my car windshield, would using that be a good idea? It's not even noticeable unless you really look at it. I really don't want to send it in, cause it's my girlfriend's notebook and she doesn't even know or care about it and she wouldn't want to be without it for several weeks (Online shoe shopping is very important to her), but I don't want the crack to get bigger and cause a more serious problem with the hinges. Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

I've been reading the forums and it seems someone else tried this. It works temporarily it seems. I will give it a shot

I tried it - and it failed miserably. Get on the phone with Gateway immediately. My 7405gx was covered by the Geek Squad and they replaced the entire chassis no quesitons asked

How long did it take to get it repaired. Do they pay for shipping both ways?

Hopefully you already have this resolved -- here's my experience. I bought the 4530gz last nov '04; also from Office Depot. (Great deal too, there was a $550 rebate at the time.) By Dec '04 it had developed the hinge crack. I called Gateway (actually emachines -- there's a different support number than Gateway has) and they repaired it for free under the one year warranty.
They sent me a box to ship it in that arrived the next day through fedex. I sent out my notebook and got it back in less than a week. This was the week between Christmas and New Year's. I was very pleased with the service and still love this PC.
So call them -- and good luck!
edited to say that they paid for shipping both ways.
Will crazy glue work in preventing further hinge cracking?
