WD released the 10k rpm drive in a 2.5 inch form factor, i guess the only real question is will this fit in the slot size wise? I guess its just a matter of the height of the drive?

    WD states specs as

    Height 0.590 Inches
    Length 3.94 Inches
    Width 2.75 inches
    Weight 0.48 Pounds

I think thats 15mm high, which is too big I'm afraid, is that correct?

What's the point of a 2.5'' drive with a massive heatsink? Noise? Why not just get a 3.5'' drive. It'd probably be smaller!!!

We just went over this in another thread. The raptor is 1. too tall 2. too hot 3. probably requires 12v power which most laptops don't have in their sata power connector and 4. if you separate it from that behemoth heatsink (which you can do) it voids the warranty.

I tried the velociraptor in my D900K, a friends D901C, and the XPS 1730. None of them can power up that drive. My board outputs 500mah on the 12V line. However that is not enough to even start up the velocirpator.
The 12V line wasnt even available on the D901C or the XPS1730, so it didnt work on them either.

I am 100% sure it will not work in your Gateway laptop.

^^ the man knows what he speaks of.

Plus its a 12mm drive and the max heigth out laptops will support is 9.5mm. So no 10K drives for laptop land unfortunatly.

We actually will eventually see a 10K drive, but its still a while coming. I remember when 4200rpm was as good as it got, and now we're in the 7200rpm range like its normal ;)

Prepositions do not belong at the end of a sentence. "The man knows of what he speaks" is the proper structure.

Up with this I will not put.

Actually, that is a heatsink and also ensures proper fitting in the 3.5" drive bay. It's a 10k RPM drive, that's a lot of heat produced to just power and spun it up. Without that sink it would overheat. Which, sir, is exactly why the drive has to be a 2.5" because a 3.5" with a heat sink making it 4.5" wouldn't fit a standard drive bay. If you are so sure otherwise, then you should also know that there is absolutely no way the drive would work..wait, that's why you asked. Cause ya didn't know. :p

I had noticed that newer 1U/2U file servers had switched to 2.5" drives. Now I see how/why...

In theory is should work, but as K TRON said there simply isnt enough power to start it up.

if anyone is interested, there is a way to put one in a laptop WITH A BIG ENOUGH DRIVE BAY, and a fan near the hdd bay like a 900t or k. add an addonics pwr supply to the case and pwr the drive that way. the 900 series notebooks are useless on batt pwr anyway.

Your only gonna prove that you can waste more money than anyone else here.

SLC SSD is the way to go.
