It will work. You may be better off with a T8300 if you can find one at a similar price.

No don't. Instead get an Intel X7800, it's more bang for your buck and it OCable.

What would be the best place to purchase an x7800? I can't find it on newegg, zipzoomfly or even ebay.

Go to ebay and you can buy it for 195. The guy who is selling them has other cpus in stock for about 25% less price than most other vendors. So look at his store and buy the CPU that suits you.

Who has bought from that "sciences_art" person on eBay? They seem to have very good prices and shipping rates. Comments on reliability, product quality, shipping, etc.

    2.6/2.8/3.0

my 3.0ghz temps are not acceptable, others had better luck.
running orthos for few minutes and getting 90+ that is.

    @2.8 i get no more than 81-3

games never get that high (crysis aside)

Would it be better to get a T9300 or a X7800? 4 MB vs 6MB....
    What runs hotter?

while I'm asking...I know ES stands for Engr Sample if I am correct? I assume NOT to get one of these because they may have been over clocked, correct?
How can you tell if a chip is an ES? (meaning if the seller doesn't denote it)
If I could get an ES cheap is it worth it?
    Any other advice is welcome.

    Thanks

Ive seen the t8300 go for 120$ on ebay. It doesnt really make sense in dollars to get anything else imo.

ES chips are not necessarily bad, try to get those that aren't the earlier models (stepping). ES chips should have ES printed on the chip itself if I remember correctly, you can also look at the stepping of the chip.

The X7800 runs substantially hotter as it's a 44W chip, compared to the 35W of the T9300. Performance, if non-overclocked, is very similar to the T9300.

Eh, I couldn't tell you about the X7800, but the X7800 and X7900 belong to the earlier generation of Santa Rosa processors, which are slightly slower clock for clock than their Penryn counterparts, thus, the 2.6 Ghz default of the X7800 is very similar to the 2.5 Ghz of the Penryn. As for the temps, there are a few threads lying around about X7800 upgrades, I couldn't tell you very much outside those threads. I can tell you that my T9300 runs cool though. Does that count? lol

liek he said, and es is not bad, mine is technically en "es" but it has an intel code on the chip, not an "es" one, mine was the last revision before retail

    Seriously? Wow thats hot.
Daaamn... So with the x7800 OCd youre 0.4 ghz faster and 37c warmer?

Im still happy with my T8300, and wouldnt trade it for one of the extremes... Depends on what youre looking for though... :)
