Installed the other day worked fine. Today I turn it on and it has to install windows updates and i need to restart, so I do. Well its been about 20 minutes now and it hasn't moved off of the blank dark screen, although the 2 blue lights on the front are on and constant and the lights for the DVD strip are all on indicating its on. In the past, the hard dive light would at least flicker, and then a dos prompt in the upper left corner of the screen after five minutes would lead to windows security log in screen.
But I am becoming worried that this hasn't happened yet. Did any one recieve a windows update yesterday that took this long? Would it be okay to power down(yank batt) and restart or am I f'd?

I will not update my Windows using auto update, I will wait for SP1 instead.

That's my experience, since the last time I using auto update and it suck. It took me nearly 8 hours at the "Windows is configuring update 30% complete" (yeah, >7 hours stuck at that message), then, limit break! I fresh install my Windows 7

PS: mine is Windows 7 Professional x64 from MSDNAA, dunno if it'll make any different

Nevermind, pulled the battery after 45 minutes. It's just freaky, it has never done that before on this laptop, just to hang like that. It booted up okay then displayed the 100% complete on updates. I guess I won't need any coffee this afternoon.

for the sake of your laptops health never again pull the battery. you can manually shut down by holding the power button down if you have too. as for the updates if had an update take forever too i just manually shut down then redid the update and it worked quickly

Thanks, didn't know that "holding" the power button down would turn it off after hanging like that. Just assumed that since all the other keys were non responsive that there was a system in place for this.

I also have installed Win7 Ult on my P-7801u and have discovered that when the system is told to "Restart" it hangs, just as you described. So if anyone out there has firgured out why and/or how to fix this annoyance, I'd love to hear!!!

Having to hold button kill the shutdown because it is locked up is not rare or unusual. I've done this on just about every computer I have ever had including macs.

I understand it was rare to you but it isn't something to worry about. Just do it. Fire it up after a count of 10-20. You should be fine. :D

oh and my ultimate 7 updates are also turned off. If you read them there isn't that much that really is of any use anyway. I select those that are interesting or good but I completely base that on what I think. Don't worry about 1 shutdown lockup but it shoudn't do this every time. Mine doesn't.

Okay, new problem. After installing Nvidia drivers, I ran the WIN7 performance monitor and this is what I got(See attached). Notice the 1.0 on graphics info. What could be causing this message? The other 2 are the info on the system. Can anyone point me in the right direction?
Also, I thought(yeah I know) that when I did a fresh install of Win7 Ult. it would remove the partitions, etc.. and write over top of everything. Obviously it created on windows.old file which I have deleted. But... the 11 gb partition for the backup is still there. How is the easiest way to remove the partition or do I have to Format C:\ and start over.
    Thanks in advance.

It seems like your GPU driver has an issue with installation. Its being read as there, but isnt posting its numbers like it should.
Also what power management are you using (remember to use high preformance)

As to how to get rid of the partition.

start orb, right click Computer, select Manage, go to disk management, then you can shrink/delete one partition and add it into your larger one

Have you tried wiping out your driver (uninstall and driver sweeper) and then reinstalling it?

It might have gotten messed up with your windows updates

Yeah, I had thought that might have been the case but who knows.
The below is from the Nvidia driver install stickied on this forum. The instructs for the drivers say to use 1 and 2 of prep and 1-3 in install. See below.

Latest nVidia GeForce for Notebooks Drivers
*Modified inf file is not required for this driver set
(Complete Preparation steps 1 and 2 -- Complete Driver Installation steps 1, 2 and 3 -- Run driver setup)

    Version: 186.81
    Release Date: August 27, 2009
    Driver Released by: nVidia
Operating Systems: XP, Vista and Win7 (32-bit and 64-bit)

    nVidia GeForce for Notebooks v186.81

    Preparation
    1) Download and install Driver Sweeper

    2) Download the latest nVidia drivers and appropriate modified inf file from LaptopVideo2Go - scroll down for direct links to latest versions

    Driver Installation
    1) Uninstall current drivers from 'Programs and Features' in control panel -- Do NOT reboot

    2) Right click 'Driver Sweeper' -- Select 'Run as administrator'

    3) Tick 'NVIDIA - Display' -- Click 'Clean' -- Reboot

My confusion is "run driver setup" after reboot.
I mean I have already the drivers installed in the directory where they are supposed to be. What driver setup do I run???
Thanks in advance, I am just one of those people that assumes nothing and takes everything literally as far as instructions go.

    **edit**
Did all this and I still get the "can't finish the perfromance test" message that is on the first page I attached in previous message. Should I just reinstall Win7 or is there somewhere I can see the "reason" that it can't finish?

Okay, reinstalled windows 7 custom 64bit and nvidia drivers. Ran performance test and got a 5.9 with the hard drive being the lowest, 5.9. I then deleted the windows.old file and in the process it asked if I wanted to delete some system files in that directory and I said yes. I reran test and I now get the same "can't finish performance test" yada yada message that was mentioned before. Why is it reading stuff from the OLD windows directory? Did you guys that updated to win7 not delete your windows.old file or not? Did you delete and not delete system files?

why do you have a windows old file?

Are you upgrading from vista? The Win7 Ultimate Custom is a full copy and doesnt require a vista install prior to it

Yes, I agree and not upgrading. I have full version and use custom option and tells it to overwrite all files, yada, yada. But when its done it has a windows.old file thats about 11 gb. I deleted that file. All the system files were dated before this install so I am confused to say the least.

I know its going to be a pain in the butt (and after my fun times with this new system i understand the pain) so i hate even asking...

But have you tried just a completely fresh install. Format the HD and then start from scratch?

Yeah i know, i upgraded my 6860 originally before i did a clean install with the SSD

hrm... so your system worked fine with the .old file, but when you deleted it windows stopped allowing your gpu to work in the assessment.

Does everything work except for that. Areo, gaming, etc? Or is the GPU unusable?

Well Kamin, I just reinstalled and used the install disk as the boot disk and format the drive but this time I deleted that reserved partition and merged it all together. Then continued on. I now have it installed and the Nvidia drivers and ran test. 5.9 is the lowest on the hard drive. There is no windows.old file now. Good. I think I will be allright now.

I do have a new question about the audio drivers. Should I install the ones from the Gateway site or does the HDaudio driver from nvidia cover that?
