I suggest build 7000 32bit Ultimate - you can find the torrent with a simple search.

I don't think they are allowing people to sign up for beta any longer. MS is supposed to be allowing the public (Customer Preview Program) to download the beta and get a key but it is limited to the first 2.5M and is supposed to happen this afternoon.

If you have an MSDN or TechNet subscription or access to one, it is available there now.

I wouldn't mind trying it out either. I probably won't if it means jumping through hoops, but it'd be nice to try it.

But if it's anything like the longhorn beta was, there will be torrents of it to be found.

I am not sure on this one. In their own Q&A they think Vista will still be their "Flag Ship" O/S.

says they postponed it at noon PST today. with no ETA on when it will be released again. They said it was due to high interest and demand and they needed to beef up the site or severs or some such thing.

    mmhmm

    Team microsoft!!! F*ck YA!

Mine (x64 Build 7000) is running smooth for at least 72 hrs now. Did some gaming (COD5, GTAIV, Saints Row 2...) and h.264/Netflix movie streaming for the most part.

For now I have Vista 64 on the primary 320GB, and Win 7 on the secondary 320GB (Just in case either one die or get corrupted...)

So I got Win7 installed.. seems to be doing great.. I only have two issues so far.

    1. I'm missing the drivers for:
    Mass Storage Controller
    SM Bus Controller

    2. My speakers will not work through the audio port..

    Any tips?

    1. The Mass Storage is the O2 card reader

    2. Install the Intel INF for the SM Bus Controller

    2. Install the Conexant HD Audio driver

I used the O2 and Conexant driver from the GW App/Drv disk and downloaded the latest INF from Intel.

Can you point me to where they are on the disk? Whenever I insert the disk it brings up folders and I can't seem to navigate through them.

(Sorry if I'm being a pain, my knowledge with Software is non-existent)

Don't worry, we all have to start somewhere. :)

When you put the disk in don't let it autorun. Open windows explorer and go to:

    "Computer->DVD Rom (AppDrv1)->DRV"

There you should see different folders with the driver names listed. Go in and hit "setup.exe" for the driver you need.

Should that fail then just download them from Gateway. That page should list the Vista 64 drivers available.

You should see something like this in explorer. This shot is from Vista but 7 will be similar. Click the thumbnail.

I want to install Windows 7 in a dual boot config but I cannot seem to get Vista to shrink my volume so I can create another partiotion. I have 44% free, 82 GB free, but it will only shink the volume by 87 MB. I did disk cleanup and defrag but I can still only shrink it by 87 MB and I need at least 16 GB for Windows 7. Also, how do I remove the 10 GB, 100% free, EISA partition form my hard drive without reformatting? HELP.

    Thanks

I don't know about shrinking partitions, never tried. Seems like bad things could happen. :D

As far as getting rid of the 10GB EISA partition you can use Cute Partition Manager. I used it to make a boot disk and was able to delete that partition. Also you could use a linux distro if you have one instead. I found out about CPM in a post here by P5mmr9.

fugli, had the same problem with resizing. Happens, because files on partition are fragmented. Vista can't resize it when there are files on it. If You want to shrink it, you have to defragment it first. Might take a while, depending on degree of fragmentetion and amount of data. http://www.mydigitallife.info/2008/...en-recovery-or-diagnostic-partition-in-vista/ try using this to delete the EISA partition. Make sure you want that!

I went with Windows 7 32-Bit Install, because my Steam Half-Life 2 won't run on 64-bit version of W7 or Vista. Episode 1, and 2 work fine on 64 Bit in either OS. With 32-Bit Vista and subsequently 32-Bit W7, Half-Life 2 works fine for me.

My system is Raid 1 Mirroring, and installing W7 was a snap. No need for drivers during install. I let windows update do all the work for drivers, and it picked up everything except one driver. I think my driver/application install went something like: Intel Matrix Storage Manager, Synaptics, Camera...and one other.

There are no performance issues or glitches outside of Microsofts's known bugs/issues. Windows Media Center is a bit glitchy, primarily due to online content issues.

After lengthy careful deliberation I have decided to stick with Windows 7 as my primary OS for the laptop.

I read somewhere if you disable the UAC it takes the Gadgets away, I reenabled the UAC and they came back. There has to be a work around, I can't stand the UAC.

Haven't rebooted in 3 days now... been running utorrent, GRID, NHL09, watching anime, tv episodes of CSI, 30Rock and 5th Gear...and no fatal problems at all.

Reported some graphic anomallies via feedback when changing desktop themes and the icons at the systray sink below the screen.

Really good beta this is turning out to be.

You can only upgrade 32bit to 32bit or 64bit to 64bit. The 64bit upgrade does work though.

I reinstalled my Vista64 so I could partition my HD the way I wanted. One for Vista, one for W7, and one with all of my crap on it.

I have found that mediamonkey does not do the automatic resizing when dragging it to the side of the screen. Doesn't bother me at all so it's a non issue to me.

How much memory do you show as being available? XP 32 has always used all 4 gig, but only showed you 3 because MS just chopped off a gig for hardware. I'm just curious to see if W7 does better in that regard.

I have been running Windows 7 Ultimate 32-bit Build 7000 for about two weeks on my P-7811 FX, and have had no issues. It also seems that in Windows 7 when TZS0 spikes to 98 degrees, it does not underclock the cpu.

Same problem. Tried the drivers off the Gateway Driver recovery disk and same problem. I know it is a Marvell Yukon 88EB8701 PCI-E Gigabit Controller. Atleast that is what it is being reported in Vista but I cannot find a driver that works in Win7 for it.

I installed Win7 just to test it out, no better then vista 64, think i'm keeping my Vista 64 and getting rid of win7. If anything I want to test win7 out I will simply install VMWare and install win7 inside it and run both at same time (vista/win7)

No sense having a beta version on my system anyway.
