Has anyone here tried to use 64 bit XP on their P-6860fx? I use it on my desktop and it works great, but I haven't found much documentation on doing an install of it on this notebook. I was hoping to do a dual boot vista / xp using a second hard drive for xp. If anyone knows of a good guide (specific to x64 xp) or has any suggestions, I'd appreciate it!

I would skip XP 64, the driver support for this laptop is bad enough in regular XP, go to 64bit and some things will not be working.

If you want 64bit, go for Vista 64, it is really awesome, have been using it for a while now and I am loving it.

    What narsial said...!

Why bother with XP? Before getting my gateway laptop, I was actually expecting to hate the vista 64-bit which came with it.. But ive had it for 5 months now - and could never go back to XP again.

    Vista blows it away.

This notebook is the first Vista computer I've had. I just noticed that some of the old games and programs I try and use just wont work on vista. Since its primarily a gaming machine, thats why I wanted to have both. Vista 64bit and XP x64. I only say XP x64 since that's the only version of XP I have a disc for. Well, I guess I have an XP home but I'd rather not use that.

But dont get me wrong! I am pleasantly suprised with Vista 64bit too. After I got some of the annoyances turned off, it's actually turned out to work pretty good.

just run them in compatibility mode, right click on the exe and go to properties, and then navigate to the compatibility tab and click the box and choose what OS to run it as.

I tried that on some Windows 98 stuff and it didn't seem to want to work too. Could just be specific programs though. I'll try what you folks have suggested. Finding 64bit xp drivers is not much fun :D

you cant run 16 bit apps on 64 bit os.

64 bit os uses WOW64 to translate thing from 32 bit to 64 bit and execute them.

Ah, thats right, the 16bit issue. I used virtual pc 2007 on my desktop to run a windows 98se virtual machine. It worked good on that computer, but it barely runs in this laptop with Vista 64bit. Any ideas on that?
