So just out of the blue I have had my laptop a month now and the wireless card just stops working. I have contacted gateway support and they say its hardware after taking control of my pc for about an hour. They say I have to ship my laptop to them and they will fix it and it will take 7 - 10 business days after they get the laptop. I asked them if they would just send the me the part and they of course said no. So I was wondering if anyone else has had problems? The light by my touch pad is lit but there is no icon in the task bar for wireless anymore so I reinstalled the drivers disable and enabled the device and still nothing. I was thinking of just buying another card but was wondering how difficult it would be to replace? Any input would be GREAT. I have not been able to find any other cases of this happening so im just guessing i have really bad luck. thanks in advance

The only thing I don't see you specifically mentioning is trying the fn +f2 key to try to toggle the wireless. Don't know if that will help but no one else has made a suggestion so I felt I could at least say something. Plus this will bump it back up top. ;)

I had a similar problem with the same circumstances: wireless LED lit but NO taskbar icon. I spent hours tracking down this issue. It turned out to be a corruption issue with the wireless configuration file.

    Check the following...

Go to Control Panel -> Administration -> Services. Scroll down and check the state of the WLAN AutoConfig. If it's not started, right click on it and select the Start option. If it refuses to start, you probably have the same corruption issue.

To further verify the corruption, open the Windows file explorer and browse to the folder: c:\Windows\L2Schemas. Open the two WLAN files with Notepad. Look for garbage or a truncated file. If you see either, you'll need to replace that file with an uncorrupted copy from another Vista installation. You may have to add user permissions to that file in order to replace it. After that, you should be able to start the WLAN AutoConfig server, and everything should be fine.

I'm not sure how this corruption comes about, but others have encountered this same issue.

This appears to be the issue .... Great I just bought another wifi card.... but can anyone get me the uncorrupted files and attach them in an email or something for me? I dont really have access to another vista 64 computer? That would be awesome!

Good info. I think to be on the safe side I'll back these files up on my system to verify I have an easy fix if this problem ever occurs on my system.

I seem to be having the same problem, but I can't replace the old file. I get a message saying I need permission to replace the file, which puzzles me since I'm running as administrator. Any ideas?

Try All Programs => Accessories => Command Prompt, then just right click on the Command Prompt proggy and select "Run as Administrator".

You might then be able to copy the files manually using the DOS copy command from the console.

Click Start and type cmd in Start Search then run cmd as the

    Hello Erik,

I didn't read the whole thread so I didn't know what is all about, just
thought you can't find the Command Prompt. Well, how long you don't
have your wireless? Did you try to restore the system? If you experience
this for few days, you should back up your system to the point (date)
    when your wireless was working.

Open the Backup and Restore Center and choose the restore point before
you lost the wireless. The Windows will step back in time and you should
have working wifi, again. You won't have to reinstall Vista, it is the last
    issue.

    Cheers...

I had this problem just yesterday.

    Here is the solution.

Open the back panel of your laptop the one that says "mini Card" on it.

You should see a tiny little card named WIFI or that has the Linksys logo on it.

You should also see another emptly slot next to it.

Detach the little linksys card form the slot and transfer it to the other one.

*make sure you screw it back on with the 2 screws that it needs to be fastened onto the motherboard*

    CLose the computer back up.

    NOW it should work perfectly.

    *rep if it worked*

    thanks you.
