So i know my router is working because my PS3 which is like right beside my laptop can connect to it, but when I scan for wireless networks on my laptop it says none are available, now my laptop is right beside my router and it wont recognize it. I re installed the drivers and it still wont pick up any thing...im also on XP. Any suggestions?

I know you probably check this but,is the switch is turned on, on your laptop. This happended to me once. I was looking through all of the network options and everything and couldn't find anything the tried the switch and it went on immediately.I must have unknowingly shut it off. One thing about that switch is you can still view the wireless network page and it doesn't tell you that you have it disabled (that would be a nice feature). If you do have it on, try to connect to a different wifi network at a starbucks or somewere. Then you'll know if its all routers or just yours.

once you get it working, i found that disabling TCP/IPv6 helps speed it up.

Try to do a complete reconfigure on the router. Usually there is button somewhere on the router to reset and then reinstal the software. My netgear needs a refresh a couple of times a year. I know its time by seeing the connection speed varry and start losing connections constantly. Usually after I do a reset and reinstall though, it works like brand new. Well..........till it happens again.

I agree, I usually start with resetting the router when I have network problems.

Use WPA/WPA2 personal if you can. It is more secure, and des not affect your speed too much

Good, I see your back up.

I have Charter Cable and power glitches. I have found full power recycling of cable modem and wireless router to clear 80% of connection problems. Sometimes I find it helps to restart laptop after power cycling. It seems that, at times, laptop refuses to acknowledge wireless router radio.

If you haven't upgraded your router firmware, then this may help you with future connectivity, then do a
    Wookie on the modem hacker...

Generally I find Vista WiFI does very well against my XP machine, one of the few features I really like with Vista.
