I don't see much traffic on the Gateway discussions. Is it because the Gateways are flawless and have few problems? Is is that there are not many people choosing Gateways?
If you had to buy another laptop would you buy a Gateway laptop again?

Anyone who would like an unexpected migraine (maybe even 2 or more!) chooses Gateway as their brand for their laptop or desktop.
Friends of mine, current and former owners of Gateway, have told me stories (humorous in relation, irritating in reality) of Gateway computers (3 desktops) being purchased within 3-4 months of eachother, lasting only two to three years then *magically* having some major issues, each only a month to 6 weeks apart, and being irrepairable or expensive to repair.
Others have told me that technical support is a serious joke. While giving the run-around (and barely speaking English), technical support has given reasoning of not being able to assist the customer with her computer and the Windows XP Operating System currently installed on it because "The Windows XP Operating System was not purchased through Gateway".
Anyone who knows about Operating systems or computers knows that Windows XP is the same for each computer and that it doesn't matter where you buy it from. [)] Steer CLEAR of Gateway...it can be a Gateway to Hell. *Ahem*
Crooked "E"'s have been known to have their problems, as well.

The traffic on the Gateway discussion I have concluded is the result of market share. Dell, HP rank at the top of world wide sales (ie like Gold and Silver Medal Winners). Acer is the fastest in growth(kind of like Rookie of the Year or Most Improved Player). Gateway is still trying to find a PARKING SPACE!

Gateway is definately going to fold up or be swallowed by DELL or the Koreans.
Anyone care to start a wager ?

I think the Chinese have a great appetite for American computer companies.
Gateway could follow IBM.
Ofcourse both are in a different league but Gateway would serve as a good appetiser ,to the IBM banquet [:X]

You are right about that. I think the wager should be who be eating them for breakfast? It may go to our Southern continental neighbors, Mexico....

I've been reading the posts concerning Gateway's notebooks. I would like to share in my own experience. The short story is I purchased my first Gateway product a notebook on January 14th. I've yet been able to use it. It's been in service 2 times, the second time for 5 weeks. It was finally returned to me still not repaired.
I purchased this in January to use specifically on a business trip beginning April 5th. As it was still in for service, I was forced to buy another notebook (Toshiba) for this trip.
My experience with Gateway's online tech support, customer service has been frustrating to say the least. There is no continuity between tech supports or between customer service reps. I wrote a letter to their 'Executive Response Team' with no response. I finally wrote a letter to the South Dakota Attorney General. This issue is still unresolved 4 months later.
Has anyone else had such a problem? -
I've heard horror stories too. I have checked the website and the notebooks are expensive. I ask them why and they say it is because they use superior parts and less integrated parts. This being said i asked why they give so much trouble. I did not get a response. we all would love to support an american company but if they are crap i don't think i should flush my money down with them

I for one am proud to be a Gateway Owner, I have had nothing but positive experience, besides my sisters eMachines hinges cracking. I have owned a gateway desktop for around 4 or 5 years, and it has been problem free. I couldnt help but notice someone recomended that Gateway follow IBM, I disagree to the fullest. IBM is expensive and hideous. I think that Gateway is doing an A+ job. I will continue to buy gateway computer products as long as they are here, which I feel buisness isn't going well, so I wish them the best of luck.

I personally have had no problems with my 7422GX, aside from the hinge cracking (and the god-aweful weight - the spec weight is 7.5 pounds, but it's really over 8). It runs cool, and can play games like DooM3 and HL2 just fine. I rally think that it was an excellent deal at $1250. Sure, I expect to have to replace it in a couple years, but how many other $1250 (new, not refurbished) computers are going to be able to smoothly handle everything thown at them today, much less 2 years from now?
I would definately buy another Gateway if it was equally cost-effective. Although I haven't had any issues involving their customer support yet.
That said, I've heard rumors that HP is looking into buying Gateway. That may not actually be such a bad thing, because for all their faults *cough*cheap, integrated everything*cough*, HP has good tech support and very reliable computers (we have an HP Pavillion from 1996 that still runs fine).

Gateways have always been good, aside from the weight, i have an old gateway thagt still runs great. And i dont think they "magicly" break down

I have a gateway. I don't know if I would buy another one. But everyone in my family seems to love gateway. i have this laptop for about 3 years or so. It has been great, I do reinstall windows here and there but it runs great after that. no problems.
But i still do get alot of errors still. -
I am happy to see a couple people standing up for Gateway. [

I am another satisfied Gateway user. I've never had problems with my notebook and the couple times I e-mailed Tech Support for basic questions, they responded within 1 hour (once it was on a Sunday afternoon...very impressive). My notebook is really slim and light (5.5 lbs). No complaints here![

I am a recent owner of a Gateway 7426GX and I am absolutely blown away by the performance. Though I have noticed in a couple threads that the hinges MAY crack, it is merely a cosmetic issue since the hinges themselves are metal. I recommended the exact same model to a buddy, and he loved it. If I am not mistaken, I do believe that a Canadian company by the name of Arima is the actual manufacturer of my particular model, and that's fine by me since they make the VooDoo Envy
Cheers.

Defining ODM
You may be surprised to learn that laptops from Voodoo are actually built by other companies. Voodoo, including many other laptop companies, turn to Original Design Manufacturers (ODM), who design every aspect of the laptop, including the chassis, the monitor (some cases), the battery, and the basic components inside. All Dell has to do for instance is assemble the customizable components, such as the CPU, RAM, and hard drive, and possibly giving the laptop a paint job.
Powernotebooks, a company that specializes in selling ODM models, notes: An ODM named Clevo makes the Sager NP8790 and the original Alienware Area 51-M, the Voodoo M550, the Hypersonic Aviator GX6, and they are all the same computer. Clevo also makes the Sager NP8790, the Falcon Northwest Fragbook DL, and the Voodoo Envy M:780, and they are also the same computer. In fact, the only companies who make their own laptops are Asus, Twinhead, and Apple.

I own a 7405GX, and it is hands-down the best notebook I have ever owned. I have owned notebooks from Apple, Compaq (before and after the HP merger) and HP over the years, and my Gateway is at the top of the list for reliability, power, and value. As was said earlier, the hinge issue is a cosmetic one - it's actually the hinge covers that crack, not the hinges themselves - and the newer models (late 7405GX run through the 7422GX) seem to have a different design that doesn't place as much stress on the covers.
If I was looking to upgrade my notebook now, I'd definitely go with another Gateway. -
I am an owner of a Gateway 7426GX . I am reading the forum and no one else has complained about the flimsy button which covers the on/off button. I also want to take note that the similiar E-machine has many write ups on the bad hinges.
My hinge didn't crack (hopefully it won't).......Has anyone had the powerbutton problems like me? Now in order to repair this. Gateway won't just send me the replacement which I can do myself with 2 screws on the hinge panel. They actually want me to send my computer in for 2-3 weeks at $167. Mind you with that they toss in free shipping but I have to get the box.
What a waste for a part that cost about $4 for the plastic topcase and time spent by a tech to screw it back on.
Screwed by gateway. The techs give you the run-around from one department to the next. You are told a supervisor will get back to you within a few days. It's been 4 now, Do you think I will ever get that call back?
Does anyone know where else to get the part? I need the entire hinge panel that covers the on/off switch unless that wee little lucite cover that shows the light is available.
Thanks.
Would you buy another Gateway?
