I recently purchased a p-7805u laptop from bestbuy, and as soon as I got it I loaded speedfan onto it.

Speedfans shows the gpu, which is a 9800m gts, idling at 58C.

However, in call of duty 4 multiplayer, I saw the temperature hit 98C.

I haven't measured it in solo cod4 or cod5, and I sorta don't want to now lol.

Best buys restocking fee is very high for me, so I cannot return the laptop.

I was playing on a bed, and there was no blockage of the vents.

I did not receive a bsod when playing cod4 and cod5, but is there permanent damage being done to the system? Or are those temperatures within the normal operating range of the gpu?

    Thank you in advance,
    Venom5

My Gpu is currently idling at 43 deg. Yours is definitely above average. It won't hurt talking to BB either by phone or instore and tell them that the temps are above average. They should let you exchange it.

you could use disk imaging software (Acronis) to restore your PC to its current state in a very short space of time.....

I had this same issue with my 7811FX. My GPU temps would max out at 110C. Best bet is to return it. I took mine apart and reapplied ICD7 throughout the system. Worked great. Highest temp I've seen on it since is 65C.

Never had my temp hit the 90's highest i ever saw was 73 and that was after 4 straight hours of L4D with a overclocked GPU. It quickly went back down the the 46c which is probably where my temps idle at.

Idle means you have no programs open, your 70 is under the load of BF2
