Yeah that's the same one I have, and it's the latest one I know of. Gateway only offers up to 94.28 on their site. But if you're BSOD'ing on boot, then it probably is CPU related. I'm not sure if the X7900 is officially supported (it would need BIOS support) in the P6860-FX, you might want to ask here: http://www.hardforum.com/showthread.php?t=1309794. Also, I know that Johnksss had a P6860-FX at one time with an X9000 CPU in it. He said something about modding the BIOS for something, I don't know if he (or anyone else) ever did.

Thanks again, Starcub..I just returned from the P.O. , mailed the X7900 back.

I'll get a T9500 now, but then again the only thing that holds me back is the speculation that my laptop might be to blame, I hope not though.

THanks for all ur help Starcub!

NP. Given that your laptop porforms well with the stock CPU, I wouldn't think your laptop is the problem. Orthos stresses the CPU pretty hard, but not the graphics adaptor. Crysis is both a CPU and GPU intensive game, so it could be that your system was drawing too much power than the stock supply could comfortably feed. To be honest, I think the T9500, or better yet, the T9300 (which I know a lot of FX owners have), is the much better buy than the extreme CPU's in terms of performance/dollar considering how little the performance difference is between those high end proc's. Good luck with your future purchase.

Yes indeed, I need to keep in mind this fact, each time I see CPUs for sale, I try to get the best (this case too - the T9500 and not the T9300) which may not necessarily be the best that my system could perform with.

I see T9300 and T9500 (both OEMs) sell in the 200 - 230 range so both of them are equally viable, but you still believe that the T9300 might be a safer bet than the T9500, right?

    Thanks for your advice.

i had the x7800 in a 6831 some months ago and that cpu ran really hot. so i sold it make a quick $8 profit and got a t8300. it runs much cooler and faster clock per clock too. the t9500 at 2.6 should run at about the same speed as of the x7900. those 45nm cpus are about 10% on average faster clock per clock then the 65nm ones, and run much cooler in the process.

Yup. Even though there's a measly .1Ghz clock difference, there was a significant difference in price at their introduction. The result is that for a significant period of time, many people thought that the T9300 was the best deal the high performance bracket. I know there are a significant number of people here that run the T9300 in the P6860-FX, I'm not sure about the T9500. Having said that, my own preference would be for the T8300. Since I don't do a lot of video processing or Photoshopping, I wouldn't need the extra cache. There is still a roughly $80 difference in price between the T8300 and T9300 (new at least).
