yeah I'm somewhat inclined to question how you are able to game (for prolonged periods) @ 4GHz without overheating too.

share your secrets and/or games you play so people can test it out :D

Ya I wondering too how can you get the cpu to 4.0 GHz, I have the stock cpu and my temps are in the high 40C and mid and upper 50'c. Anyways just tells us what games and screenshots of the temps.

    @jav2008

you might want to clean out your vents of dust. Your idle temps seem a little too high.

I idle @ 3.2GHz @ 31C with an X9100 (and that's OCed from the stock 3.06GHz) to give you an idea for comparison.

    Under load @ 3.7GHz juiced with 1.375v, I hit approx. 82C.

@ hello Moto: Well i usually get 40C idle and 50's if I am watching broadcasts, surfing the internet. I may need to check for dust since I have this notebook since January.

    I can confirm it.

4,00 GHZ, for more than 2hours, playng XPLANE.

temps going to max, at about 95 tto 100 C, but at room temp of 28 C (Rio de Janeiro, no air conditioner).

But it had only a increase of 2 fps comparing to 3,6 GHZ ovckl, so I went back to the 3,6 (the bottleneck of my system is the HD)

X9100 TJMax is 105C so @ 110C, your FX will shut down for sure to prevent the CPU from cooking off.

Whenever i've experienced auto-shutdowns as a result of overheating, my temps read 102C so gaming at 4GHz with a reported max temp of 100C (as Blackgilian states) is really pushing it....not really worth the risk for your FX to randomly shut down mid-level in some SP game or mutli-player online.

but hey, whatever floats your boat :D

Agreed, the 2 or so FPS is not worth killing the system. I had found 3.6 GHz the happy max for the chip and maintaining reasonable temps. 3.7 GHZ was doable as well but again yeilded no real world benefits. Even 3.2 GHz ran butter smooth as the 9800m is the definate bottleneck of the system.

For those running the P79xx and 260m then 3.6-3.7 GHz makes more sence as the video card is 10-30% stronger..............

I been thinking and I am going to get the T9900, it a little cheaper then the x9100 on ebay. I am just updating my CPU is because I can't play COd; Blck Ops and other games that requires a better CPU

had a quick look on ebay.com just now. It's only a $12 difference max.

If it were me, i'd opt for the x9100 just so i have the OC option available to me, should i ever need it.

hello Moto: I am thinking on buying the T 99 00 from extremeprocessors, I believe he has the X9100 for more money I know the prices changes.
I know you give me at explanation for buying the X9 100, but I think it will make too much heat and that is a concern for me. Although the OC is a good option from newer games in the future.

Two CPUs built with the same technology and running at the same speed and voltage will put out very similar amounts of heat. The Intel TDP rating of a processor is just a number. If you want an X9100 to put out the same amount of heat as a T9900 then don't overclock the X9100. If you want it to put out less heat then underclock the X9100.

The X9100 TDP is 9 watts higher because you can overclock the snot out of it and run it 25% faster than a T9900. At the same speed, the difference in heat is minimal. Some X9100 CPUs will run cooler because they are built from better cores that require less voltage to run reliably. When overclocked with lots of extra voltage the X9100 can be made to run hot as hell but no one is going to force you to run your CPU on the edge of self destruction. With the X9100, it's your choice. Well worth the extra money because it is so flexible.

@ ratherUnclewebb:I guess you're right,I rather spend a little extra money for CPU that's me overclock. Is it easy to overclock the CPU, because I've never have done it, if you know how to overclock CPU is it possible to tell me how to.

ThrottleStop makes overclocking an X9100 simple enough for a child to do it. :)

On the main screen of ThrottleStop there is a button towards the lower middle that says UNLK. You click on that button to unlock a Core 2 Extreme processor. This button will only appear if you have a Core 2 Extreme CPU. Once your CPU is unlocked you can increase the FID (multiplier) and VID (voltage) as high as you like.

With a couple of clicks of the mouse instead of running at:

    11.5 x 266 = 3.06 GHz

you might be able to run reliably at:

    14.0 x 266 = 3.72 GHz

or maybe even faster. You might get lucky and get a good chip that can run with the 15.0 multiplier like this guy did.

    http://img151.imageshack.us/img151/5874/photo2dp.jpg

How fast you can go depends on how cool you can keep your CPU running. When increasing the multiplier to go faster, you will also have to increase the VID voltage so that your CPU remains stable at full load. Once you get your new toy there will be lots of users on this forum that will be able to give you some suggestions about what sort of settings their X9100 requires.

LOL. that's me [my desktop] in the pic.

I ramped it up just to see if i could manage it. I dont use 4Ghz on a daily basis for anything. Having said that, another forum member - Blackgilian - has reported begin able to game for extended periods of time @ 4GHz but temps are in the 95C-100C region which I personally think is really pushing it.

I could game ta 4.0 GHz, albeit I only really have Dirt 2, without issue but had no real world gains in doing so with the x9100. anything above 3.4 GHz yeaild no real world gain and even then only minimal above 3.2 Ghz. For that reason I almost always ran at 3.2 GHz. I figured why push the chips if there is no appreciable gain?

Hi everyone: This question is going be different from previous comments.
I just notice that my hard drive is low in space and I know this computer can have two hard drives. I bought a seagate 500 gb 5400 RPM, but I just notice that Micro Center doesn't carry that same hard drive. I was thinking if I can get a 640 gb hard drive, with the same rpm and same manufacture.so that be 1140gb, but i heard that the comp can only handle 1tb.

Sorry for the somewhat late response, Jav. My configuration works great. For everyday use, I run the x9100 at 3.06 GHz and undervolted to 1.125. It regular internet surfing and other regular tasks do not take the cpu temp over 35C. I cant speak for the t9900; however, the x9100 has been awesome. Gaming is sick and working on cpu intensive programs is a breeze.

Forgot to mention that the 35C daily usage temp i mentioned is without the notebook cooler running. Definitely go with the x9100. Undervolting allows you to run even cooler than the t9900, I believe.

I can't say for sure. I currently have a 500 and a 320 in here. Sometime around winter I will probably upgrade the hard drive size and go over 1TB so I can tell you then if you don't do it before that.

The maximum capacity per drive on your laptop is 128 PiB (Pibibytes), or 128,000 Gibibytes....

In other words, no limitation! 48-bit LBA FTW.

Get as big of a drive as you want, the Samsung 1TB 2-platter drive is a great deal and pretty fast.

The 1 software limitation is that you are limited to a 2TB drive if the new drive you buy will be used for booting. There may be a way around this, such as by using a smaller partition at the beginning of the drive to just boot the Operating System, but I'm not sure.

You won't have to think about that issue for another year or two until 2TB laptop drives come out..
