I've got that classic problem. My P-7811 FX is locking up.
I've got that weird error that's something like this:
Event filter with query "SELECT * FROM __InstanceModificationEvent WITHIN 60 WHERE TargetInstance ISA "Win32_Processor" AND TargetInstance.LoadPercentage > 99" could not be reactivated in namespace "//./root/CIMV2" because of error 0x80041003. Events cannot be delivered through this filter until the problem is corrected.

My machine locks up completely needing a hard reset. So far it's only happened in games. I thought it might have been an overheating problem but the thing locks up sometimes at low temperatures (on a 2d old game once too!). It locks up on old games, new games, Oblivion, Bioshock, World of Warcraft and everything. It takes 5-60 mintues to lock up and it sees quite random.

I've used it for about 10 days now so I'm pretty sure it's limited to gaming. No problems with Photoshop and other Digital Media but I haven't done any really stressful stuff in that area yet anyways.

    Solutions I've tried:
I've tried replacing drivers and all the basic stuff.
I tried that command prompt thing with...
    net stop winmgmt
    DEL C:\Windows\System32\wbem\Repository\*.*
I've tried a few more that I've blocked out of my memory.

Nothing is working. I'd much rather not deal with driving to Best Buy and making an exchange..

    HELP!

Seriously list all the possible fixes and I'll try them all! At least the ones I haven't tried yet...

Well I don't have the real recovery CDs but I have the Operating System Disc which I'll try as a last resort. This computer doesn't have anthing important on it yet so I never made any and the problem has been here since the start.

either way if you have anything on it you can just get a usb flash drive and take care of that quickly. Do you know if this may be a heat problem are you making sure that the air is flowing out good on the left hand side?

Most other people report that they can have this thing work perfectly at 60-80 degrees C for hours and hours with no problems. Mine dies at random temperatures. I think the highest it's been was 75 C on a hot day but usually it's 65 max on highly demanding games which shouldn't be enough to make problems for this GPU. Usually it's 55-60 load. 35-40 idle. It froze once on a really old 2d game at a temp of like 44...

At this point after a lot of testing I do NOT think it's because of overheating. Heck, I've got a notebook fan stand cooling it, I've aimed an air cleaning to spew cold air right on top of it. Then I go in the coldest room in the house and it still freezes after 5-60 minutes of play at a random time.

    I wouldn't triple post but I'm DESPERATE!

I tried E-wrecked's second solution and it didn't work. The 3rd one is basically the same so I highly doubt it would work (and I don't exactly understand how to pull it off)
I get that same old error message...
    WMI ID 10
Event filter with query "SELECT * FROM __InstanceModificationEvent WITHIN 60 WHERE TargetInstance ISA "Win32_Processor" AND TargetInstance.LoadPercentage > 99" could not be reactivated in namespace "//./root/CIMV2" because of error 0x80041003. Events cannot be delivered through this filter until the problem is corrected.
The thing doesn't go above 65 C in temp. That shouldn't be high enough for it to be a temperature problem. Heck, It froze at like 55 once while playing a 2d game.

Things I'm still going to try:
Different GPU drivers though the ones I tried SHOULD work since they would with others.
I might reinstall Vista but that might be too much of a bother compared to just exchanging the thing.
Anything else that I'm able to do. :p

I've got to exchange this thing by Tuesday AT LEAST to get within those 14 days. I'm thinking about trying to exchange it later today if nothing works.

Umm. I looked over the thread and it looks like they already are giving a play-by-play. Just follow the steps. Looks pretty straightforward.

Well I tried installing a driver that someone said would fix the problem but it says I'm not compatible when I try to install it. :/

One thing that should be high on the "try everything" list is to re-seat your memory. Basically open the bottom as shown in the manual, remove both sticks of RAM, and put them back in making sure they are both fully seated.

A worthwhile variation here is to try running your games with just one stick (2GB) installed and then the other. If one works and the other does not then that's your problem.

No guarantees but memory errors are often very weird & hard to diagnose, and this is a simple fast way to eliminate that as a possible cause of your problem.

I've neglected opening up the case because I don't know what that does for the warranty or the ability to exchange.
Best Buy is okay with this? My last computer peoples gave me the bull crap and said "You open it then we're completely off the hook!"

Being able to upgrade memory and hard disks is standard in the industry (except Apple :( ) so I do not believe you violate any warranty unless you proceed to do obvious abuse to the innards of your laptop. The 7811 makes it very easy to get to these parts; as long as you don't force anything and be sure to ground yourself to discharge any static before handling RAM you should be good to go.

BTW you might be wondering why re-seating the memory would help: oxidation. The contacts of the RAM and the carriers can become slightly oxidized over time, and removing and re-inserting the RAM sort of "polishes" everything insuring proper contact as well as making sure the sticks are both fully seated.

As I say no guarantees but more than once simply re-seating the system RAM has fixed intermittent errors or lock-ups for me.

I've had memtest fail to ID bad memory and flunk memory that had no errors so I don't bother with it any more. Your mileage may vary.

lol, when in doubt just return it, I have returned my Gateway P-7811 at Best Buy twice already and tommorow I am going in for round 3.

It's nice to know by tommorow I will have sent Gateway back $4500 worth of Laptops.

Unless it is past 2 weeks, then thats bad.

I exchanged it. Everyone must PRAY FOR MY LAPTOP!!! I'm installing Bioshock and I'll be testing in that game for at least 2 hours or until the thing freezes (HOPEFULLY NOT!). It'll be impossible for it to overheat. I've made this room I'm using specifically for testing the laptop quite cold, it's suspended mid-air partially and it cannot fail! :p

If this doesn't work... Idunno. I wouldn't want to pay the restocking fee.

If you're not happy with the laptop and get tired of taking it back, you can exchange it for a similar priced laptop and they'll usually waive the restocking fee. YMMV depending on the particular store, but the sales guy I bought it from told me that and I've heard other people say they've done so successfully. Hopefully you'll be able to get a working 7811, but if not, it's an option at least.

I haven't had sufficient time to test yet. I played Bioshock for 50 minutes and that's it. It almost froze a few times but ended up just being a small lag spike. No death freezes yet but I'll test it much more tomorrow.

The tiny lag spikes do concern me though. In 50 minutes of play there were maybe 4. The other one, though it froze, had none at all. This might be due to the fact that I got an "Optimized" version of the thing. It was the only one left at the store and they said they took off bloat ware and stuff. They did a **** poor job of it though lol and there's funky stuff everywhere.

Undervolting definitely helps, but it is not required to keep the laptop from locking up.

Undervolting what???? My CPU never goes above 55C regardless if the back of my laptop is elevated or not. Then again, the CPU fan runs constant

Also, I have not had one single lock up... yet *knocks on wood*

Oh yea, I had 3DVantage run overnight.... ZERO LOCKUPS OR ISSUES!

CrapFactory, just go in and exchange it. Explain to them that every game you've tried causes lock ups. Demo it to geek squad with 2 games that lock up the most.

Better go and do it before tomorrow. You'll be glad you did...
