ok i just installed the newest edition of ubuntu 8.04 with everything working the sound and the graphics and the internet.
first download the image from http://www.ubuntu.com/
mount it with daemon tools in vista
click the install and it will install in windows and it is very straight forward
watch this if u need help watch something like this http://youtube.com/watch?v=n5x9iJWXbUY or http://wubi-installer.org/
restart pc when done and click on ubuntu in vista boot manager
ubuntu will install and restart pc
when you first login in sound will be working with wifi working
connect to you wifi or by Ethernet cable
    next go to system-administration-update manager
let it download all the updates and wait
when it done go to system-administration- hardware drivers
click to enable to the nvidia driver and it will download the driver and then restart pc now go to visual effects and hit best to put the compiz effect on and then your done
none of this affects your mbr and there is no grub stuff and it works wonderful
    picture guide now

    ALrighty!!

This is how it should be.
Its not easy for newbies (like me!) to manually configure the H and V resolution or other settings out of the box.

Yes, I noticed the sound works right away, its great!
I didnt get sound with 7.10. Also the standard video driver wasnt tuned enough when installing, because I had to blindly pres alt+F to Forward the installation.

Looking forward to update my install and get compiz up and running :)

so did everything work for you?
the graphic card will work after you update and when you update the drivers

I have been running ubuntu 8.04 since a few days after I got my laptop (still running 7.10 on my old laptop though). You can also boot from the ubuntu cd and install it that way as well. It will automatically set grub (ubuntus choice for a boot loader) so you can boot from ubuntu or windows.

I find it kind of funny really, my sound works perfect in ubuntu, yet in windows thanks to the driver update, I can only have sound when headphones or speakers are plugged into my laptop.

Nope, not yet, hopefully this weekend.
I got problems with internet, long story :)
Sound is working out of the box, so I have high hopes :p

Btw, how did your compiz install go? Was it smooth without issues?
Do you have the effects up and running?

I hope Envy is not needed to install the video driver.

yeah it now built in to ubuntu
its you right click and hit change background go over to visual effects and click best then you have compiz its way cooler then aero in my opinion
i dont know what drivers i used i just click use propertiory driver and it downloaded and installed and reset and it worked great. i did it by going to hardware drivers.
if you having problems with internet go to publlic library because wifi will be working and update then go to drivers and update that and your done.
iam very impressed with the linux community there getting better and better
now iam trying the new fedora and gos.

If u don't like GRUB (I hate it personally  ) you can use your Vista disk to repair the vista bootloader and then use EasyBCD to add back your linux install to the Vista Bootloader

It is, I just did an Ubuntu install the traditional way, restored my vista bootloader and accidentally totally annihilated the Ubuntu bootloader and couldn't access ubuntu, so i reformatted the drive and i'll just use Wubi :)

Uh oh... what does that mean? Once I download the image from the Ubuntu website, what do I do next? Run Wubi directly, or something else in between?

    It works!! :D

The installation is pretty straight forward.
    Install --> updates --> restart.

After that the effects can be enabled. It will prompt for the nvidia restricted driver and after installing that you're done.

Cube desktop, wobbly windows, sticky windows, you name it.

I booted from the cd, so my bootproces is going via grub, I guess.
sudo gedit grub/boot/menu.lst for changing the default :)

Ubuntu runs on the P-6860FX as well, correct?

EDIT: Also are there any downsides to booting with Wubi? Are the GRUB problems limited to Gateway's or is it just universally bad?

    Thanks

Yes, Ubuntu runs on almost everything and it runs perfectly on the 6831fx, so it will be flawless too on the 6860fx.
But its better to go with Hardy Heron, not earlier version.

What GRUB problems? Im not aware of any.

Oh the GRUB problems I was talking about were what people were talking about earlier in this thread - I don't really know the details, might just be that they don't like the interface or something.

I tried UBUNTU on my P6860FX and it worked fine ... I tried SUSE 11 64bit but I had a strange issue with the screen and it kept acting like static electricity !!! I tried to fix this using sax2 but it didn't work.
I gave the 32bit version a try and it worked pretty good .
If you want to give SUSE 11 a try , you should go with the 32bit version.
