I am about to purchase a new 7811 for my little brother and I was wondering if any of you 7811 owners regret buying one.

I have no regrets about my P-7811 FX purchase.
I got it at the $1250 price point. The only thing I do regret is picking Mass Effect as the free game. I really haven't been entertained with it. It's impressive, but just not keeping my interest like I thought it would.
My P7811 FX was flawless out of the box. When I purchased mine I made sure the box wasn't banged up or deformed before handing over money. Then I did let those Geek Squad guys take it out of the box under my direct supervision. Any back room shenanigans and the deal is off! The screen had no dead pixels, everything booted up fine, and the system passed the initial Directx diagnostic. I took it home, stressed it under Crysis, was satisfied, reformatted and kept Vista 64, and haven't had a single problem yet.
Well, ok, I do have one problem. My video driver craps out when on battery. It tends to fail every 30 minutes or so but Vista recovers it.......except that one time. I just need to upgrade off the stock driver.
At this price point, I don't think anything else can touch the P-7811 FX. -
I'm very happy with mine! I also got it for $1249 and COD4.
-
Very happy with mine, bought it for $1249 with Crysis. I wish I could have gotten COD4 but it was sold out
.
-
surprised no one has said this yet..... i wish i was your brother
-
Ok here. Only problem is the ghosting but everything else is fine...
-
Mine works great especialy upgrading the cpu to X9100
-
I just got mine yesterday and in testing phase, the first one had a bad lcd but this one seems much better.
-
My only regret is the glacial pace of updates from Gateway, especially the so far non-existent release of the new BIOS which has RAID support. Perhaps things will get better as more and more people buy this model.
Otherwise mine has been pretty perfect from out of the box. I have some backlight bleeding at the very bottom but I've found this the norm with many laptops and otherwise the screen is outstanding. Your brother has a very nice brother. -
Nope, none, nada.
-
No regrets at all. Got it for 1250 with COD4 for free. I wish gateway would hurry it up with the bios update and kinda wish I had a backlit keyboard but at this price point it's hard to nitpick about, well, anything.
-
I've tried 3 units and all have been a little defective. The one I'm on now has a little LCD defect like images leaving faint imprints on a black screen. Kind of hesitant to exchange for a fourth one cuz I'm afraid it will have worse problems like freezing up on games.

Will you adopt me as a little brother -
I got mine for 1250 with a free COD4 game. It runs beautifully and flawlessly at 1920 x 1200.
The first one didn't, though. It would freeze even at 1280 x 800. It also froze on some of my video testing. So I took it in and this one is perfect so far. I have left it running high-stress stuff that causes plenty of heat for hours on end with no problems.
Well actually not perfect, because like my other one there is a tiny bit -- like almost impossible to see, even if you are looking at a black background -- of light bleed from the bottom of the screen. With a normal windows desktop and the taskbar, you can't see it at all. This is so common to laptops and so extremely hard to see that it just doesn't bother me.
This is the fourth laptop I tried this month, and I'm finally happy. The first two were inexpensive Hewlett Packards, but neither one could play DVD's without locking and crashing. So I guess funky laptops are not rare. You just have to keep plugging away. But don't let a little thing like near invisible backlight bleed get you down, and don't think that one lemon means every laptop you get is going to be bad. Just test very thoroughly before your 14 day exchange period expires.
Laptops are one of the few products for which it's worth buying a protection plan, too. You can get one from Best Buy that even covers non-working batteries, and batteries like this generally wear out in a year or two and are pretty pricey. So the effective price of a protection program is lower than it looks like, at first. -
Well today is my second day I have had mine and so far I am happy. I have been doing some testing on it and so far everything is looking good. Have not re-installed OS because waiting to do all my test with factory default and make sure it all is working great. So far it been running 3dmark 06 all day today without a glitch while i am here at work. I did have to trade the first one because it had 2 ugly white patches on the LCD with a black screen when you moce a bit to the left. The second very nice screen with a small amount of bleeding at the bottom but thats pretty common on LCD's. I can live with that.

No regrets and no defects. Got mine with Mass Effect and am lovin' it.

My only regret is that I purchased this at the $1450 price instead of the $1250 price
STILL a great deal and I love it
I also had to return my first one for white screen artifacts on the black screen (also on the left!!) just like Joeelmex noted but this 2nd one is rock solid stable (so far) and the screen is perfect.
Im a happy camper. -
i dont have a 7811, but i do have a 6860, this is my 3rd day owning it and im happy with it. but from what im hearing the 7811 is having screen issues, so if it was my decision i probably would be hesitant on purchasing one until they have the issue resolved, it might work like a charm now but the longevity of a known problematic device is questionable, maybe its just the high res screens that are the issue, not positive though, other than that they sound like pretty potent machines.

Personally I'd avoid the 7811. I have the 6860fx and love it. However, there weren't many problems with it when I got it (and still aren't). However this forum seems loaded with 7811 problems. Just my two cents.

I bought it 11 days ago (ordered and paid it 11 days ago, picked it up 6 days ago) for 1.449,-.
Can I just walk up to the bestbuy store with the invoice in hand and ask for a refund of 200,- ? -
I got mine from best buy labor day weekend. I really love it this is my first laptop that I've owned personally and It's astounding. I really love the screen, and while I was a little leery at first after reading all of the problems/bugs it had I feel it's safe to say that mine has been holding up very well.
No overheating or freezing or BSODs or any of that.
**crosses fingers**
That being said I'm in the process of parting out my lian tower with a quad and crossfired 4870s.I'm gonna take that money and buy a 42" TV and a 360.

I really appreciate all the feedback. Picked it up last night and it is a very nice machine and my brother is very happy with the choice. The only problem now is I may have to get one for myself..
-
If my 7811 lasts me as long as my Inspiron 8500 did, I'll be QUITE happy. my 8500 is still kicking and screaming.. 5 years later.. It's now property of my son
-
I regretted purchasing the laptop. It wouldn't stop giving me loads of problem. Can't install majority of the games I play (BF2 for instance), and it wouldn't let me reinstall Vista.
I should have gone with ASUS's gaming laptop. Sure the specification isn't that good, but reliability would've been a lot better. -
-
will you parents adopt me?
!! please!!!! No regrets here i love mine added a bluetooth dongle and vga to svideo/yellow and a 320 HD this thing is like a dream come true (really will they adopt me please?)
-
-
I did (better, my brother did), got my $216 refund.
Thanks -
how is the screen ?
-
A slight ghosting on the left.
But I don't care, bc otherwise this machine is a beast and it past the testings done by my brother without any problems.
Looking forward to hold it in my hands in 4 days.. -

Bought my 7811 yesterday and my only regret is I have dialup at home so I need to go somewhere else to do online games like FPS. But that is why I bought it in the first place
