the gateway m460 seems like a great laptop, but there seem to be so few reviews out there. has anyone here owned one or had any experience with one? the major issues that i've read about it have been heat and fan noise but i want to know if that was an isolated event or if its an actual bothersome problem.

Hi,
I owned and returned M460X last month. I was rather dissappointed.
There were 3 issues:
1) right side of keyboard felt funny. Like keys 123, asd, qwe etc
felt without spring underneath. I looked at similar model in
homedepot. Keyboard was fine. So, I must have got a bad one.
Gateway would have replaced it under 1 year warranty, but
issue #2 and 3 made me return.
2) WXGA doesn't buy you much in terms of screen real state.
It's just 1280x800...
3) Fan comes on so often it's hard to believe! And it's
LOUD. I ordered M460X with 1.6GHz Pentium M. It throttles
down to around 800 MhZ in "portable/laptop" setting under
power mgt. Everytime processor switches to max 1.6GHz
fan would turn on for few seconds, loud and fast,
then shuts down.
It may not bother everyone, but I'm very senstive to
noises.
The trouble with gateway's thin n light design is that
it's done with heavy reliance on fan cooling down the
system.
I'd recommend checking out similar retail model in
best buy or home depot before ordering online.

I purchased the M460XL and posted my comments on the system in a follow up response to a review that someone submitted on the system a few weeks ago. For a PC the machine is nice (apparently pc users have come to accept hot, loud, and cheap feeling and looking) but this company really has some serious problems aside from its hardware. If there is another company that meets your needs you should think twice on this one.
I ordered a 6000 and had these thoughts in comparison:
6000 starts up much faster
6000 hot key interface is much more professional
6000 is cooler to the touch
6000 is much more quiet
6000 has a better disc drive and keyboard
Speakers on both absolutely suck
M460XL has a slightly brighter screen
Both screens flex too easily, 6000 doesn't ripple when touched on the back
6000 w/ BG card could hold a network connection.
any thoughts on the m460?
