does anyone know how to backup the bios or update the bios?
does anyone know how to flash the bios or which program to flash the bios?

i seen a few things in there i would like to change, but cant seem to find the right program that will back up my bios correctly. i have tried looking around at gateway for a bios update file, but haven't found one for the 6831/6860.

some one had a 6831 bios rom file on here, but it will not work, due to some errors in the file. i really need a clean version of this file. preferably one of a 6860. if any one can help with this, i would greatly appreciate it.

    thanks.

Unless things have changed you cannot "back up" a BIOS. BIOS is ROM. That is why they use the word "flash" not "install" a bad flash can be fatal to your system. Not completely but trust me you don't want to have a bad flash. You will have to remove and replace the EPROM (Erasable Programmable Read-Only Memory) chip I believe. Unless someone has made a hack I think some of the controls in the BIOS you are wanting to access will not happen. Many MFG's with all computers limit your BIOS options DeLL comes to mind, notebooks even more (all). I don't think very many open BIOS notebooks as consumers don't build them from the ground up (assemble) so you don't need that level of control. I know you want it but they don't want you calling them up after you screw things up. If you build a desktop from components and you screw it up no one to call, see no problem but yours. Sorry but you should be very cautious as from your question you don't really know enough to play with the things you are trying to play with. If I am mistaken please clarify because I will try and help if I can.

Edit: BIOS is not a driver. This notebook just came out so no BIOS updates, then certainly no hacks.

    understood....

lets see...i have tore apart my dv9740us bios and flashed and made changes to the bios along with changes to the 8600m gs card as well. i also know how to fix a bad flash. (never had one as of yet) worked with dell bios as well and have replaced an eprom or two for a few customers. (lost passwords older models)

and yes you can backup the bios. at least with winphlash you can. that way for those not knowing what hey are doing can replace a bad flash with the original one. (bios.bak)

sorry for the wording, but it's to cover all involved for a more definite answer.

and i started this thread because i didn't see one specifically on bios flashing or updating of the 6831/6860.

    not looking for a hack.

and of course im with you..bios is not a driver but can be shadowed to memory. and that option is in there as well and can be enabled.

and the option im looking for is right there and can be enabled then the system has to be re flashed and the new setting will take effect. i tested in the 6831 rom file found around here, but something else was wrong with file and the part table was bad. (whatever that meant)

OK you clearly have done more of this than I. I tried to search and ran into the same problems. I will look, not this minute but you 1st just want to find a good BIOS update? What is your BIOS version now? What are we trying to accomplish so I can maybe research. I had a DeLL in the past, I flashed the BIOS. I also used hacked drivers on it. Much more out there for DeLL's. I have a Gateway (not gaming machine) and have never found anything in a year and a half. So I know you want a BIOS flash, you want to back up BIOS. Tell me for what purpose as it might help me search. I do now know you have a clue what you are doing. Now you gotta let me know what the goal is.

basically i just want to raise the cpu clock. when i looked in there for extreme cpu, it shows clock speeds up to 3.6 ghz and has the option to enable and disable. now judging by when i was flashing the bios on the hp, you can enable the sections which allow it, rebuild the bios then flash it with new setting.

problem is like you mentioned earlier...no bios update file to start clean from, so someone has to retrieve it from a system. like they did the 6831fx.rom file...im not sure that you really can use this file on the 6860, but sure was hoping so. now every time i go to test the system by going into advanced options (winphlash) it errors out. letting me know something is not right with the file or i could be using the wrong flasher. dont know, but am trying to narrow things down. i would love to over clock my x9000 to 3.2 or 3.4 and see how the temps fair along with performance, since that option is in the bios and my chip has a max multiplier of 31. this seems like a very real thing to accomplish, so im on a mission.

and i might even check out that 4th line of the 8800m gts for over clocking..... seems like they through that in to kill of the over clocking completion for their card *LOL* ati and rivatuner. wonder if you revert it back to 3 (2d/3d/thr) would the card still funtion and this would more than likely enable ati and rivatuner software to work. (speculation of course)

bu that's what im trying to do, so any help would be greatly appreciated!!

every where you see a star, you can change those options, compile and flash your bios and they will take effect. even if you dont see it in the bootup bios.

    indeed!
this would put it that much closer to the clevo (santa rosa verison)

once i get a working copy of the 6860 bios. it shouldn't take me long at all..and if all goes well, those with extreme (x7800/x7900/x9000) chips can really see why they spent the extra money.
