    I just purchased a gateway p-7805u but have not yet opened it. What worries me is the bankruptcy of gateway and the possibility of not being able to get parts if something happens to my laptop or that I might not be able to get it fixed at all. What do you all think, can this be a real issue?

    It's something that I would be concerned about. Gateway's long-term viability is in question right now, and while I don't think that you will have any problem getting parts in this coming year, after that who knows?

    Gateway is now a subsidiary of ACER... bankruptcy to gateway is really unlikely due to the fact Acer is now the head of the company

    Most of the parts that would most likely fail such as HDD's,Wireless, CPU and RAM are easily replaceable and parts such as the screen, keyboard, battery, power brick and motherboard will probably be readily available for at least the next two years.

    I hope the Gateway FX line keeps going but if it doesn't then my "2011 laptop" will most likely be an Alienware M17

    As was posted earlier, Gateway was acquired by Acer and Gateway Pro (business, government and such) was then sold to MPC computers.

    Look here and it says;

    Look here and it states;

    Then you can look here to get the details of the following;

    So our Gateway consumer notebooks are backed by Acer, a solvent company, so we should be OK.

    To clarify this a bit... If you purchased a Gateway notebook in a "consumer" manner, for example from Bestbuy or some other big box store you are most likely covered by Acer and should be fine warranty wise.

    If a Gateway notebook was purchased in a "business" manner. For example ordering from Gateways business website or bought a business notebook direct from Gateway most likely your warranty was* services by MPC.

    I say "was" covered because of this: http://www.ktvb.com/news/business/stories/ktvbn-dec2908-mpc_computers_.1b5c5edd.html

    Oh, so MPC is definitely going to be history. Seems they were on death watch even when I lived in Boise a few years ago.

    I do not think Gateway will be in trouble but I am no psychic. In any case this is a great laptop for me. I would buy it even if Gateway were to go under.

    If you have an extended warranty through bestbuy then bestbuy is on the hook for repairing your laptop. I have a tigerdirect warranty on mine so wether or not gateway goes down wont effect me.

    Plus you have to think gateway doesnt actually make anything on their laptops. Its all bought in bulk from ODM's and put in the FX case.

    By the time something important breaks (assuming you dont get an oddball lemon) you will probably be able to buy a parts machine for dirt cheap.

    Plus get the warrenty... then Best Buy has to take care of you or give you a new notebook
