So I have a line on getting a brand new main board from a P-7808u on the cheap. Its on'y the board with the GPU and the video ram. No system ram or processor is included. My only question would be: is everything else from the 7805u compatible with the 7808u board? Would any of you guys attempt converting your dual core only FX P series to the 7808? I am thinking of doing this and doing a write up for the install? What do you guys think?

It should be a relativly easy task, the only think i would worry about would be the heatsink not being able to handle the quad and it frying.

I seem to remember that the quad heatsink in the FX is larger to cover all of the die.

Would you happen to know where to buy individual parts like the heatsink for the 7808?

Thats a toughie, you might be able to order it directly from Gateway, although not dealing with them for anything is usually the best option.

As to your conversion, as Batman said, all the parts are the same between all the FX models, apart from small BIOS changes, and possibly a different socket on the 7805/8 to accommodate the quad cores. It would be possible for sure, just time-consuming maybe.

I don't mind the time, I just like modding things to see if it will work. However, the heatsink not working is a deal breaker as I would prefer not to nuke my processor.

I'd so copper-plate the entire heatsink if i had the workshop and equipment to do so; not to mention adding in a couple of fins too. Kinda like K|N copper heatsink mod.

    That'll teach my X9100 to idle @ 54C

if you go this route I am wondering if you can see on the board what the difference is between the stock board and the new one. Supposedly there is a mod but no one has let the secret out yet.............
