While we're on the topic of CPU upgrades, does the X7900 and X9000 fit on the 7801u? (basically 7811, so we can go with that I guess)

And also, I've read WAYYY back that if you put in an extreme processor, there was something about the adapter not being able to handle it, is it true? (This is supposing no overclocking is done at all, maybe even undervolting the cpu)

they will probably fit but will downclock your system from 1066mhz to 800mhz. better off with a t9600 t9800 x9100.

Isn't the 7801u/7811 ram stuck at 800mhz anyways? And you sure the 3 cpus listed work with the gateway fx?

the 7811/7801 ram is DDR3 1066mhz. and any of the newer line of penryn processors (p8400, p8600, p9500, T9600, T9800, X9100) with the 1066mhz bus will work in the 7811/7801. its the Q9100 and QX9300 mobile processors you have to watch out for.

I read that stuff like the T9800 and x9100 are montevina chips. Is the 7811/7801 montevina? I thought those were the previous gen or something? Must be because people kept hammering about only t9300 and 9500s working back in the days.

Ah, so bottom line, the 7801 will accept it, end of story? =p

As for the higher up cpus, i notice the T9800 is 2.9ghz while the x9100 is 2.8. For the same price I assume the 9800 is the better buy?

    X9100 is 3.06Ghz, not 2.93 like the t9800

As far as i know, X9100 is the fastest dual core processor with the best overclock possibility for notebooks.

    I thought x9100 was self-overclockable...just like good old 7600G...

you cannot OC the x9100 on the gateways, there is an OC limit in the BIOS @3.0Ghz, it will run at stock 3.06Ghz, but will not OC any higher.

That is why an X9000 or X7800/7900 are more worth it.

If you had the choice between the t9800 (is this the fastest non x series cpu?) and the x9000, which would you pick? Don't the t series generally use less power or produce less heat? Anyways sorry for my ignorance of the newer cpus. I was slightly more informed back when the t9300 was *the* cpu to have.

Definitely go with the t9600 or t9800 since you can't OC past 3.0ghz anyway
(200/70mhz won't be noticable IMO at those speeds). i'm gonna get the t9600 when i get some chistmas cash =)

the T series cpu's have a 35 watt TDP, P series cpus 25 watt TDP, and generally the X series cpu's have a 44/45 watt TDP.

so the P and T series cpus use less power and produce less heat.

i think it was Kamin that said that my max cpu temp (undervolted T9300) is close to his idle cpu temp (X9000)

Good idea, guess I'll aim for the t9800. Is there a need to buy a better ac adapter since I've read a while back about the stock adapter not being able to handle any load higher than the stock settings? Like overclocking the cpu or gpu would make the adapter whine? I'm not sure, this was a while back. And I'm referring to the 7801u (which I just ordered) in case it matters, which I doubt.

Edit: And while I'm at it, what is the 7811/7801u chipset? Or whatever it is you look at to determine if a particular cpu works with the laptop?

Can the 7801u be upgraded to dual nV8900M GTS in SLI? how does the monitor compare to some of the other gaming notebooks on the market in same price range (like toshiba X305-Q705/706? Does the touch pad offer a horizontle scroll as well as verticle or any other programable spots liek upper and or lower corners like in most Toshiba?

The chipset is Intel PM45, aslo called Montevina.

    Montevina+Penryn+Intel WIFI = Centrino 2

Please, correct me if I'm wrong here.

I'm also looking to upgrade my cpu (7801)

Since this topic is on cpus, It'll probably be better to ask here than make another topic.

Looking on Ebay I see alot of chips cheaper, I know some of them are different (don't provide the temps)

Then I found this one, it is by a seller that provides the 'different' cpus, but this one doesn't have any of the same warnings.
    http://cgi.ebay.com/Intel-Core2Duo-T9600-2-8GHz-6M-L2-True-PGA-BestQuality_W0QQitemZ110325900420QQcmdZViewItemQQptZAU_Components?hash=item110325900420&_trksid=p3286.c0.m14&_trkparms=72%3A1234|66%3A2|65%3A12|39%3A1|240%3A1318|301%3A0|293%3A1|294%3A50

Would yall think it is ok to buy this? And would it have the cpu temps (so if I want to OC I know when to stop etc)

anyone else see the discrepancy between the pics the ebay seller posted for that cpu? in one of the pics it shows the processor as the T9600 in cpu-z, everest and windows computer properties....but the pic of HWmonitor shows an X9100 cpu in the computer....

Their pictures could be confusing but as long as the feedback is good, I'd go for it. I just won an auction for a T9800 (supposedly engineering sample model) so I'll see how that goes.
