Hey guys. I've got a question. How come everyone seems to be making a big deal about the 7805 even though the 7811 has DDR3 stock. The processors are the same and the only difference I could find besides the RAM is the video card. I know the 7805 has a 1Gb but without DDR3 RAM to take advantage of that, is it truely a better deal? opions?

    @Syrup123, the P-7805u FX does have DDR3.

the problem is that it is so hard to get a hold of the refurb 7811... it always comes and goes... so far I am lucky enough to have gotten one at cost(pay shipping and Paypal fees) from a kind soul here...

Best Buy said that it's only got DDR2. . . Also, can you get a new proc to increase speed? Blu Ray compatible?

That is a typo on BB behalf. Refer to the specs on Gateway's site: http://www.gateway.com/systems/product/529668231.php#techspecs

The only difference between the 7811 and the 7805 are...

    7811 vs. 7805
    ----------------------------
    512mb Vram vs. 1gb Vram
    200GB HDD vs. 320GB HDD
WUXGA vs. WXGA <---this seems to be on the newer batches, not the original shipment.

    that is it.

And yes, the CPU is upgradable (see the Valid Processor Combinations based on chipset here: http://ark.intel.com/chipset.aspx?familyID=35515) and the current optical drive and be swapped out for a blu-ray (it uses the standard laptop sata interface).

Some also reporting lesser flexing on the palm rests, SD MEM slot also reported as express boot capable now, RAID0 support out of the box (7811fx I believe needs a bios update), and the 7805u doesn't carry the Vista cds. We also are missing 1 antennae I think.

The FX models before the P-7805u all have three antenna's, There maybe a hidden third antenna somewhere, but no one has found it. The P-7805u is the only model so far with a Intel wifi 5100, and two antenna's.

And based off the P-171fx pics from Anandtech, we don't have the third wire.

just want to say thanks guys. Im looking at this one, especially now if its upgradeable. It sounds like they addressed every issue of the 7811 and made it better!

Except for the lower resolution screen which I happen to fancy on my 7811, but it is a touch hard to read at times.

I don't know what the current incarnation of the P-7805u has for memory. I bought mine 12/29 and it was the one with the LG 1920 X 1200 screen. Yet I wondered if I actually had DDR3 memory. So, I used CPU-Z and the SPD tab showed each memory slot as having DDR3. The memory module manufacturer is Samsung and Samsung part number is: m471b5673dz1-cf8. I looked that part number up and lo and behold it is DDR3 memory.

Just to be clear on a couple of misconceptions I continually see repeated:

    1. Whether or not the mainboard supports DD2 or DDR3 will have no bearing on GPU performance. The GPU is not sourcing mainboard in most cases.

    2. DDR3 memory at 1066 vs DD2 memory at 800 would be, at best, just about a wash. The memory timings on DDR3 are much more lax than DD2 to help it ramp speed. This means that real advantages do not show up until DDR3 is utilized at much higher clocks. But that is the point of the memory. Future, higher clocks.

    3. DD2 and DDR3 are not interchangeable. Gateway can not make a mistake and install DDR2 in some computers and DDDR3 in others unless they are also using different mainboards.

    Anyway, happy hunting.

Gateway and BestBuy have been inconsistent about specs and pricing. I guess we can assume that the P-7805u is now out of beta and into production and that the specs on the Gateway site are finalized?
