I have a funny little problem here. There is this file called extmgr that is causing my computer to crash whenever I get to it in a virus scan (doesn't matter what virus scan I'm using). Apparently, as I just learned when trying to find the file's exact location for this post, it also crashes my computer when it is found in a search. I know it's in the windows/winxs directory, and under one of the amd64 folders, although I don't know which one because this file is apparently the freaking plauge, and will kill my computer if I get to close. I've had this problem for a while, and I solved it by just not running full virus scans, but that's getting a little annoying. So, does anybody know what this toxic file might be? Oh, and this file is apparently never accessed outside of a virus scan or search, because I never get any other crashes. I'm guessing that's because I have the P8400, and not an AMD processor.

Did you uncheck the read-only box? In any case, I don't think this will help. For one, I can't get anywhere near this file, much less look at its properties. I also think that's the wrong file. IE7 has and extmgr file, and it's located in the System32 directory, but the file I'm talking about is located in the winxs directory (what is in winxs anyway?).

This seems to be one of Vista's dirty little secrets. It is the Windows Side by Side directory. Once that will grow perpetually with your various installs upgrades and even updates. I'm reasearching it now for some options.........

Edit: this is not the real file, it is a hard link to the real file in the Windows\system32 directory. here is a read for the scoop................
