I have a Gateway Fx 7805 that is 3 years old and I am still on the original bios and have had zero problems with the PC. As others pointed out on this board when I asked about updating the bios, if it ain't broke, don't fix it. :)

yea i can defiantly understand if aint broke part
but i have also seen were a bios update has improved a system
even though it was running fine .

and i have also seen the complete opposite too especially with
    program updates. :)

The original BIOS had the gpu fan always on and occasionally make a huge annoying noise as it burst spins. All the while, there was nothing but cold air coming out of the fan. Annoying, distracting, and difficult to do homework with, I upgraded to the newest BIOS on the gateway support website and the gpu fan doesn't run 24/7 anymore. I suppose it depends on which BIOS you're using. .17 is the best I hear, but I use .23 becuase .17 isn't found anymore.

    P.S. Oh I wasn't aware you had the n series. I have a p series, p7801u.
