My computer hits these temperatures and above while playing WoW on medium-high settings. For the past month it has been causing me frame rate issues and had me worried about my computer. It will stay at this temperature for at least 20+ minutes and possibly way longer till i hear a fan come on and air blows out of the left side vent. I haven't monitored the temperature before this started happening so i have no comparison but it seems like the fans are way less active than they used to be since i got it 5 months ago.

is something obviously wrong where i should be taking it in to get it checked out? or should i not even worry about it if i get a cooling pad? Is there a way i can control my fans so that it turns on before the heat gets so severe or just stays on?

plz make any advice as noob friendly as possible !!
    ty!

Those temps are way too high, be careful not to sustain them for long periods of time or you could melt and or damage your gpu. If your fan doesn't come on for 20 minutes before it starts cooling I would try updating your video card drivers to the latest version, and if that doesn't work I would advise having it checked out or sending it to Gateway to be repaired.

it almost sounds as if your fan is getting clogged and struggling to spin. this may be the case as to me it makes sense. this is what i think is happening. your fan is clogged in some way. the fan i believe is controlled by voltage so your fan may not be getting enough voltage to turn the fan. until it receives a high enough voltage to generate enough force to turn it this might be why it has to get that hot to do anything. i suggest taking apart the laptop and making sure nothing is wrapped up on the shaft of the fan. you could also while your in replace the thermal compound. if it is clogged your only option is to open it and clean it out manually because spraying it clean with duster and such wont help with something holding on if you know what i mean.

if its really getting to those temperatures i would suggest you not use it till you get it fixed because most solder that is used in electronics has a melting point around 190c. if its really getting to those temps you have a serious problem on your hands because that is a very dangerous temp to have not only because it will kill the laptop but a very real fire hazard. be very careful when moving that thing around at those temps especially if you still have the battery connected. if your laptop still works after that temp then consider yourself very lucky. but i think that has to be a false max because i dont think it would even be possible for the gpu to go that high without failure.

Clean out the fans, if not the GPU maybe has an issue, I would take it in for a replacement. That is way too HOT for the GPU.

Did your computer go to sleep while it was monitoring the temps ? Its happened to me a few times. 255 C is not a correct reading. Mine never goes beyond 51 C since i dont run any video intesive applications or games. But after i resume from sleep its shows 255 C which i can confirm is not correct.

I have the same notebook model, and had a similar problem. Check if there is a thermal pad filling the gap between the Northbridge and its heat-sink, in my case, Gateway has used some low cost material for this thermal pad, (I’ve replaced it by another spec. Tpli 240, http://lairdtech.thomasnet.com/item/gap-filler-pad-tims/tpli-8482-200-series-gap-filler-material/pn-3893?&seo=110&bc=100|3001624|3001685|3001690|3001225, but there are many other, I suggest you give a look on these ones too, http://solutions.3m.com/wps/portal/...3E02LECIE20KHO6_nid=27HK136N9VbeG7W0C8BLTFgl). However, there are some more things to check… Now, it will be necessary to disassemble the whole product, which it’s good moment to verify if it’s everything fine with the coolers. When you achieve your VGA’s heat-sink, check is there are thermal pads between the VGA’s memory chips. (In my case, there weren’t any one… I live in Brazil, and here it’s hot like Hell, so you can image how many heat issues I had. I think Gateway believe that air is a good material option for thermal conduction… And it’s good, on Alaska.)
So, if the same problem is present in your notebook, I recommend you to apply these thermal pads between the memory chips and the heat-sink. However There are chips on both sides, and you may need to split some part from the insulation film from the other side, upper skin, replacing these splinted parts by the thermal pads— attention don’t remove the insulation from other areas, you can damage your hardware—filling the gap between the memory chips and the notebook structure. (You will notice that there are small features on this structure with exact location from the memory chips. So use it to dissipate the heat.)
