i just bought a gateway t-1620 this morning. the sticker on the laptop and the best buy ad both say it comes with 2gb ram. when i ran the performance test, it only shows 1662  i ran the bios and it says the same thing...any reason for this?

256mb is allocated to video memory. The laptop has integrated graphics and "steals" 256mb of system RAM for video. Since Windows shows amounts of RAM in Binary format your amount sounds exactly correct. It recommended to change the video memory to 128mb as the 256mb setting is simply a marketing gimmick and offers zero increase in video performance even under 3D. You can change the video memory to 128mb in BIOS.

I just bought one on Friday and the battery is good for 2-3 hours. Anyone have an idea on where to buy a replacement battery? Thanks.

What are your opinions on the Processing capability of this laptop? Is it sufficient for fairly intensive applications like GIS software, or if you're not familiar with GIS software, the 3d Gaming or something like that.

Also, is the battery life pretty good, i.e. 3+ hours under general browsing, spreadsheet, email situations?

Does it seem fairly sturdy? Does the keyboard flex? When you grab it like a book when it's shut do you feel the lid compress a lot so that you may be concerned about damaging the display?

Does it run hot, or average for a laptop? Is it noisy? Loud fan, hard drive, or DVD drive?

The reason I am asking is that I bought the T-1620 and a Lenovo 3000 Y410 on Black Friday for about the same price, and I am trying to figure out which one to keep without opening the boxes and incurring the wrath of the restocking fee. Any recommendations would be greatly appreciated?

I'm incredibly happy with my T1620, except for three very minor annoyances:

    * There is a stuck pixel near the lower-left corner of the monitor, but thankfully it's stuck with a rather benign shade of beige. I hardly notice it. I'm not sure there's anything to be done about it, either. This happened on my Mac and Apple said that there's a certain number of stuck pixels that customers just have to accept. Dunno how Gateway feels about it.

    * The hard drive makes what seems to me to be an unnatural clicking sound every few seconds, regardless of whether or not the drive is actively writing information.

    * Vista. Yes I know I'm being ridiculous, but I've had a bugger of a time installing certain games (Like Civilization IV), playing certain DVD's (Vista thinks I'm a pirate. I paid for the movies, honest! :D ), and uninstalling the bloatware that Geeksquad put on the dang thing.

Aside from that, however, I am incredibly thrilled to have this laptop! I love my Apple desktops, but their laptops are just too dang expensive.

it doesnt feel cheap and its got a nice outer build. there is a bit of flex on the keyboard but nothing to worry about

battery life if i set it to power saver is a good 2hours

it runs a bit hot on the left side but its not bothersome or what. all laptops run hot if used extensively,

the fan and the cdrom and hardrive is sooo quiet since the fan is only on the left side and keeps the laptop cool

i love my screen i was lucky enough to get it with no light bleeding it was perfectly balanced and no dead/stuck pixels.

    bad things about it is

the screen and the mousepad buttons are total fingerprint magnets!

other than that its cool :p
may i say again build quality is excellent and the aluminum brushed hotkeys and around the keyboard add alot of style to it.

I experienced exactly the same situation on the machine I bought for my daughter for Xmas. Laptop was ordered from Best Buy on Nov 22, 07 and delivered on Nov 30, 07. I sent emails to Gateway and Best Buy this afternoon (Jan 7, 07) - so far only auto response. Gateway's web site also says 2048 MB of RAM. It's performance also seems to be slower than my HP with almost identical specs, including both running Vista Home Premium.
