I did a nice clean install of Vista 64 but when I try to install the Gateway Recovery Management application from the Application Disk I get an error message: "eRecovery can not be installed - 6. Software Disc" and I'm not sure what the heck that means? I'm going to try and look on Gateway's website. I have google that error message but nada.

    Thanks,
    Phong.

When you did a clean install of Vista it sounds like you took out the partition Gateway keeps their extra data on. It's the "CLE" partition or something like that. Basically, this kills most of Gateway's support applications. Also, I haven't found a way to restore it, including using the Gateway supplied CD's

The good news is you don't really need it. You'll just be more on your own when something starts acting wonky.

You may still have the 8GB hidden partition with the recovery info. Might as well use it for something ie space. Gparted will allow you to delete the partition and then you can incorporate that space with Vista disk management.

I'm thinking the Vista install can not see that hidden partition.

Just a for what it's worth comment.

There was a 10GG hidden partition that I saw but didn't actually touch, oh well, I do have my 2 Recovery disks and 1 Application/Driver disk so I guess worse case is to recover from the Recovery disks and redo the Vista install, hahaha, sad me.

Yep, maybe it was 10GB (8 must have been a previous laptop). Anyway it's a waste now unless you retrieve it.

    Create folder:

    c:\acer\preload\autorun

it can be empty and retry.

(for those still looking with google :D)

If you still have the recovery partition, you can use this to make the computer boot in to it and recover from the partition. I did many times back in the day.

Sorry to high jack..but what type of cd do I use to make the recovery discs?

I think the Apps and drivers are 800MB and the the other one is like 2GIG

Is there any way to save the config I currently have now (as the recovery is just for settings that the laptop was shipped in)? If so, how!! Thanks

What kind of discs should I purchase for this? (Gateway recovery)

Also, is there any way of saving my CURRENT setup so if the OS crashes i can reformat and revert to the custom settings I have now? If so ...how?

    Thanks

DvD+/-R doesnt matter. DL works also. Brand is up to you. To back up you could clone or ghost your hard drive. Bunch of software out there.

Now once you get this setup use this AWESOME software called deepfreeze.

Deep freeze is great for everyday use and if you live on the edge with your OS.
You get your OS exactly how you want it from a fresh setup with all the drivers, software, configurations and you save that in deepfreeze. It will always go back to that setup if you restart the computer even if you have a trojan. I have been using this for 4 years its sweet.
