    Hello,

A couple months ago I got a 6860 from bestbuy. When I was doing the initial install of all the games I wanted to play, I noticed that the DVD player makes an odd, kinda grinding sound after a few minutes and this sound lasts a couple of seconds. I figured it was nothing and decided if it continued I would look into it more. Later, I was watching a DVD and noticed about half way through the DVD that the sound was coming from my computer again. It sounds sort of like its speeding up and then for a couple seconds there's a little grind like something it very slightly caught. It doesn't sound very good.

I also noticed when I first got the laptop that if I tap my fingers on the left palm rest it sounds a bit... loose, or jingly. Well, it doesn't sound solid. It sounds like when I tap there is plastic moving around a bit. I found when I hold the DVD drive with my hand, putting pressure on it slightly into the drive bay, it doesn't sound like that. Its firm. This is all with the drive closed.

So, if it was just the slight jiggly issue, that'd be fine. And the noise isn't a terrible issue to me since I don't use the DVD player often. BUT, what I don't want is the DVD player to chip, scratch or otherwise mess up a DVD (which it hasn't done yet), or to break after the 1 year warranty wears out.

So I think i will try to get in contact with gateway and have them send me a new drive I can install myself, because I wouldn't like to be without my computer for 2 weeks or so if I send it in.

This was a long post, but does anyone else have this issue with their DVD drive being loose or making an odd noise... and does anyone know if gateway customer support will be willing to send a replacement drive without me having to send my computer away?

Thanks so much for any help!

    Rotz

I've never had any problems with the dvd player but I recall reading about this issue before.
