So guys i was taking apart my laptop Gateway FX P-7805U to clean the fans however I broke the zif connector which connects the media bar to the motherboard. i tried touching the ribbon on the part of the motherboard then the screen inverter also made a sound and got messed up, the inverter can be replaced easily but how do i connect the ribbon now...I cant turn on the laptop without it.

    Looking for advice

Cheap solder irons can be found at your hardware store and you should use rosin core solder not acid core. Yep, our beloved 7805u's are getting a bit long in the tooth now so maybe you want to think about a new laptop. My 7805u is still working and I use it every day for productive work.

Hey thanks I dont know much about soldering..;perhaps I can get another laptop but i am sad about this one going to waste,,, if i can fix it for cheap so it can atleast be a standby. Everything works perfectly on my computer too. You think something like this will work

New Pencil Type Soldering Iron Welding Gun Tool Solder Tube Wire 45W | eBay

That should work. Price is right and shipping will add some more but still better then one here in our hardware store. But check your store first. You will still need to buy solder. TANWare is the expert on soldering here. Ask him for help too.

This should not be attempted by a beginner at soldering. you don't need to be an expert either, it isn't as complex as soldering an eprom in etc.. so long as you are comfortable in your skills to solder small joints without creating shorts and/or cold joints.

Yes they use an inverter for the CFL displays. I do not remember if these were accessible off the main board or behind the display etc.. Also as a side note you do not need a solder gun as a cheap solder iron will do, just be careful with it.

Man after reading this again and what you did I could say Board replacement. I did my one bonehead move as well but on a XPS M1730 breaking the LCD display connecter and bought another board and back in business it did cost me thought a very expensive learning lesson. So if your solder doesn't work I would advise against doing as you will cause more damage in the small of a space. Just find a working board on eBay that matches the part and replace it-don't waste your time thinking you will fix it and if you can still use it without it then by all means use that instead but if you want the media bar functions get a board and do it the right way. What your attempting is something even a expert will tell you isn't worth it for that old of a system and a replacement board would more then benefit you then what your trying to do.
