im about to buy this ram for my gateway m 6862 http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16820134831 or is this one better: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16820134661
but the cas latency is: 6
will this not work in my laptop.if it does end up working will i see a performance boost in games and in vista score. is lower cas latency better or not.
THANKS IN ADVANCE![]()

The lower the number, the better. Lower latency means that the Ram is quicker and better for games.

Sorry for the late reply, havent been following things closely the last couple of days.
RAM is probably the most overrated system component. For those who are benchmarking junkies, you'll see a difference by changing latencies......but the basic rules are this:
More RAM is better
Memory intensive apps like Photoshop benefit from more system memory.
Latencies matter, to a point
Lower latencies at like clock speeds are better. Like clock speed means a CAS latency of 4 is better than a CAs latency of 5 if both are run at 800MHz.
A higher clock speed is best.
I'd generally recommend a kit of CAS5 DDR2-1066 over a kit of CAS4 DDR2-8. Clock speed trumps latencies....within reason. If we are talking CAS4 compared to CAS5, then go for the higher clocked kit.....if the difference is more pronounced, like CAS4 to CAS6 or 7, you'll have to weigh the differences.
Again, if you are trying for the best benchmarking results, then upgrading the memory is a fine idea. However. I'd recommend more memory over faster memory, especially in a notebook.
AS to those kits you listed, those quite possibly could be identical kits....same PCB, same ICs. The only difference could well be the SPD settings. If you bought the PC2-6400 kit (DDR2-800), it is guaranteed to run at 800MHz, and should probably run CAS4 at the lower speed....while the other kit runs CAS4 at PC2-5300....it m ight scale to DDR2-800 at CAS6, but no guarantees.
help plz need quick answer
