Hey guys,
Got my P171x and love it but want a faster hardrive. Whats the best way to upgade to a new hardrive with no dataloss and minimal down time?

get a 7200rpm one, if you can get a 200gb 7200rpm drive the date transfer will be great.
also a 320gb 5400rpm will have a pretty decent transfer rate, because the data will be more dense -
I know your original question was how to do it without any loss, but to be quite honest, if you are considering one 7200, I'd give two a little more consideration.
If you RAID 0 two 7200 RPM drives, you will absolutely find all the troubles associated with reinstalling Windows well worth it. I did it right off the bat. I used the computer about 1/2 a day with the old 5400 RPM 250 gig drive and it wasn't bad. However, the difference between the old drive and the (2) 7200 RPM drives in RAID 0 is extreme.
If you find the cost of (2) 7200 RPM drives a bit much, then consider just adding another 5400 RPM that matches the one shipped with your hard drive and making a RAID out of the two of them. Seek times for that setup wont be as quick, but the sequential transfer rate should be very high.
how best to swap in a 7200rpm in P171x?
