i tried uninstallation chart but not everything is there.
i removed trial version of microsoft office, norton etc programs from there
but things like netzero, ebay, earthlink etc adwares still there and they are not on uninstallation chart. do i have to delete and fresh install or something?
also is bigfix needed program? i removed it cuz after updating gpu driver to nvidia 179.28, vista aero system rating wouldn't show my scores. i uninstalled bigfix and it started to work again.

i also would like to know safe OC clock settings for this laptop.
i am planning to leave it like 12 hours a day so should i leave it
    stock speed?

Make your apps/driver recovery disk, and format and reinstall vista with the disk provided by gateway. Then use the apps/driver recovery disk to reinstall drivers only. You will then be in a clean state.

that's the only way? gahh.. it already took me like 5 hours to install programs i need on computer.. guess i will have to live with it.. =(

one more question. i made recovery disc and when i use it, what happens?
do i have to use it on boot to make it work? does it just install vista or does it just install everything that factory default setting has?

There two types of recovery disks that can be made, one is the factory image disk...the other is apps&drivers disk. The factory image disk is what the unit is shipped with. It contains all the bloatware/drivers. The apps&drivers disk contains the bloatware and drivers, but you don't have to install the bloatware. Gateway is kindly enough to ship a Gateway OEM copy of Vista, which is a fresh Vista installation disk...it doesn't include drivers.

When I got my 7811, I did what you did...uninstalled all the bloat, then installed my apps. Still the computer felt slow. Then I made the recovery disks (factory image for future resale purposes, and the apps&drivers disk), and reinstalled Vista with the provided OEM disk. Then I installed the drivers with the apps&drivers disk (installed dox video drivers instead of the shipped ones) and then my apps. My comp was so much faster.

You do not need Bigfix and it uninstalls easily as you noted.

I removed Netzero, Earthlink, and eBay when I got my system about 2 weeks ago, but if I remember they aren't exactly installed on your system. The short cuts perform the installation only if you choose it.

In other words, they are not a problem unless you run the installation. You can delete the folders/directories that they are in if you want to recover the HD space.

I believe the eBay shortcut is simply a link to the eBay website, but since mine is gone, I'm not sure. If so, it also isn't taking up any real space nor is it really "bloatware" running in background.

I also got rid of Adobe Reader and am using the much less intrusive Foxit Reader 3.0 to view PDFs.

    Did that help?

You could also try CCleaner. It took about 1 gig off of my computer, but it's more for cookies and temporary files than bloatware. On the other hand, it took over 20 gigs off of my friends computer, and I don't think all of that was just cookies.

I just got a 7805u, but there wasn't any factory disks that came with it? Is that normal or was I suppose to get a disk somewhere....?

That's the way Gateway does it, Jedi2155 -

Follow the instructions in the manual on Pg. 88+ to create your recovery disks.

What's the point of making recovery disks? You can always just restore to factory settings without any disks, can't you?

What if your HD fails, gamadaya?

You'll certainly need the recovery disks.

Oh thanks! I just got the laptop a few hours ago and I haven't had time to check out all the reinstalled stuff although it looks pretty clean relative to some of the HP's/Dell's/Toshiba's I've worked with lately.

phew.. i just formatted hdd and reinstalled OS and then installed drivers only.
things look much better now.. but jeeze.. it took me good 5 hours to make things look like before. no matter how good computer technology gets, it always seem like waiting time is longer than doing actual things. everything just takes so long.. =(

Uh-oh, I didn't think of that. I'd better make back-up discs too then. This 7200 rpm drive sometimes worries me. It's temp is too high.

Errr...I just tried to make a backup and driver/app discs with my DVD+R's and it gave me a burn FAILURE every time! TWICE on the restoration discs, and once on the driver & apps disc...funny thing is that when I put the supposedly failed disc in my drive it seems to read them fine..

On the other hand, I only have disc 1 of 2 of the recovery disc. I'm wondering what might have went on...I just did a Vista Easy File Transfer from my main desktop and I was wondering if its possible if that might done something to it but I doubt it was the cause.

    Any help?

I installed Windows 7 and it made my recovery partition un-accessible. I had to re-install using a copy of Vista Ultimate x64 from scratch which was actually pretty painless. After some tweaks, everything is awesome and running great.

I have to agree. I was able to clean my hard Drive/OS of all the junk bloatware in very little time.

Then again if the OP has to ask how to get rid of a Ebay link, maybe its best they start with format

Oh look my car is dirty, must sandblast it and repaint in order to get it clean.
