Well, I disbled two help applications, and "Groove Monitor", with everything else on. I'm on roughly 40% of my 2 gigs (give or take a few). So that's around 800mb I suppse. This is on Idle BTW.
EDIT: I just realised that this was regarding Gateway notebooks only. Sorry. I'm running a HP, if that matters... -
I think Vista uses a chunk of memory for caching which makes it look like more memory is used than actually is. To help reduce memory usage try disabling un-needed services:
http://www.blackviper.com/WinVista/servicecfg.htm
That's a good guide but if you don't feel comfortable doing it manually youself try Vista Manager 1.51. That has quite a good 'service optimiser'. -
Superfetch is filling up your RAM. It pre-loads programs into your RAM that you use the most.
Free RAM = Wasted RAM. -
Superfetch use doesn't show in the used RAM of task manager, I have 0MB free, but only 962MB is reported as used in task manager.
I'm currently using 962MB with Firefox and iTunes open, which account for about 200MB of that. It depends entirely on what background apps you have. I basically only have Norton, MSN, and drivers installed and on idle I use about 750MB, though background usage drops if I open a game that needs the RAM. -
Check the Perfomance tab in the Task manager. Look at Physical Memory.
Whatever free RAM there is, superfetch will fill in. If a program needs to use the RAM, it will dynamically allocate. Thats why it doesnt show up on the Processes tab
But i realised the OP was talking in a different context. If you have unecessary programs/services running then your RAM usage will go up. I have about 50 process running on idle after a few tweaks. -
In the attached picture, it shows that 1.01GB of RAM is used and then under free physical memory it says there are only 4MB free. The 1.01GB used is by applications, and is what people refer to when talking about RAM usage. The remaining .99GB less 4MB is Superfetch, people don't count it when they say how much RAM windows is using.

mine is using 1.05GB of my 4GB, but because i'm on vista 32-bit it's probably out of 3GB, maybe a little more, like 3.5GB
