I wouldn't bother messing around like that unless you want to customize your hotstart buttons. The right way fix it is to just reinstall the drivers. That would also be the fastest way.

    http://support.gateway.com/support/drivers/getFile.asp?id=21442&dscr=Hot%20Start%20UtilityVersion:%203/29/2007&uid=218259831

Just like the webcam drivers it says it's for 32bit versions of Vista but it's actually not 32/64 specific; Gateway is just dumb. They also specified the MB as compatible but not the model number so it doesn't show up on a driver search unless you know where to look for it... like I do.

There's no driver for that it's there's a keyboard fn switch to turn those lights on and off. I don't have my Gateway with me to see exactly which one it is but maybe someone can look down at their hands really quick to help you out.

This is all is says on the review page

"One fairly awesome feature this notebook has is a direct access button to enable or disable ALL of the external lights around the notebook. This includes the multimedia keys, power and harddrive activity lights, and even the AC power and charging lights. With a simple FN+function key press you can disable all the distractions on your notebook, which is great for movie watching."

Got that it's FN/F1 and it works fine at turning all the lights on and off.

But the Hotkey lights are still not comming on. The main key will launch Media Center, the music key will launch Media Cenetr music but the DVD button only launches the main Media center??

We bought this for our son for xmas but he got it early. He did a reformat on his own to do a clean install and wiped the recovery partition before I could make back ups. All else is working perfectly...
    Thanks again for any help..

Go to Gateway's site and download/install all the drivers for it, see if that doesn't fix the issue.

Yes I loaded your link for the hot keys and all of the Gateway drivers are in. Everything is working great except the Hotkey lights and the dvd button going to dvd play instead of Media Center home.

I got to the command in regedit but here I am out of my comfort zone. Not sure what to change the value to to point the DVD key to open in Media dvd pay??

    Does it operate as follows?:

"The DVD Instant on Video button" opens Media Center in Vista Home Premium and Vista Ultimate or the DVD player program in Vista Home Basic.

"The Windows Hotstart button" (=>) turns the notebook on (if turned off) and opens Media Center in Windows Vista™ Home Premium and Vista Ultimate or Windows Media Player in Vista Home Basic.

Note: You can use this button if the notebook is turned on, turned off, or in Sleep or Hibernate mode.

Note: You cannot use this button if you are logged on as guest.

If not I would be concerned about the wrong version of windows Vista being installed. If that's not the case then you do need to make changes as posted by fiziks above. I also have a post on how to do this but it doesn't vary from his much at all.

Then I guess all is right with the buttons. The Vista install is from the Gateway Vista Prem. 64 disk.

It's just itching at me that I am that close to a perfect install but cant get the lights going...

Has any one ever uploaded a copy of there back up disk? (the one we should of made)
