toshiba has Toshiba Qosmio X305-Q706 for $2000.
it's exact same as p-7805u but has 1440x900 screen and 2x 9800m gts sli.
i am sure gateway can pull off something similar for $1500-1600 if they put their mind to it.. right?
i mean p-7805u has identical spec minus one gpu and another $400 for extra 9800m gts sound pretty reasonable if not too much.
    so 1920x1200 screen, p8400, 4gb ddr3 ram, 320gb 7200rpm hdd, and 2x 9800m gts sli for $1500-$1600.. i think they can pull it off considering they released p-7805u 1920x1200 for mere $1050 at launch(and $1150 now).

You have multiple factors. to list a few.

1.) main board must be sli compatible
2.) obvious cost of 2nd gpu
    3.) increased cooling capabilities
    4.) increased power specs
5.) better cpu to feed the gpu's
6.) higher end laptop so probably lower production capabilities.

amongst a myriad of other concerns like support etc etc etc.

Gateway would also need a new casing. Notice how much bulkier the Toshiba is compared to the Gateway.

It would be nice, but alot of the reason the FX computers are so cheap is because most of the machine was paid for ages ago.

Notice everything uses the same style motherboard/case/screens/touchpad/fans/keyboard/hard drive caddy/etc etc.

They basically just bought everything in HUGE bulk quantity, and all they have to do is sell out to win. THe only thing they have every really changed is the chipset on the MOBO's when motivena came out so its still the same set up just a slightly new motherboard

It would take gateway ALOT of investment to come out with an entirely new system that would support SLI/crossfire as it would require a pretty large re-engineering of the overall system.

It would be nice, but i would rather just have a higher end single card (come on 4870's) than a dual card set up. but honestly for the price point the FX line has never really disappointed. Still the best bang for you gaming dollar ;)

yeah i agree we need higher end single cards, i like that these are so affordable, and that they are thin. My best friend has a Toshiba and its way too big in my opinion. When I'm ready for a new one I hope Gateway is still selling affordable gaming rigs, I'd buy another.

Sli notebooks are kind of primitive right now, most of them lack the cooling system to keep all of that hardware in that small amount of space chilled. they are also ENORMOUS.

Hasn't the 9800 and that series been about it for the last 18 months? Any clue when they'll get some better single cards out?

Not hardly. 18 months ago they werent even dreaming about the 9800 class cards. I dont even remember is the 8800GTX was out 18 months ago (though it more than likely was)

as to better single cards. ATI will be releasing the 48XX series of cards this year which according to them post 80% improvments (reaching desktop levels) over the 3870s, which were OMG good.

Hmm...the 9800 GTS and the AT 48XX both have DDR3 (except the crazy DDR5 one) and are 256 bit @ 1024 mb. Is there really that huge of a difference for gaming?

And if/when these cards do come out, are they going to appear in notebooks within the $1049-1299 range? :p

The ATI 4870 will be using GDDR5, and the 9800GTS cant compare to it. The 3870's are running neck in neck with the 9800GTX and the 4870 is supposedly 1.8 times as powerful. Thats a HUGE power increase. The high end 2xx series cards from nvidia will out sometime late this year and we'll have to see if it an actual new card, or just a Re-Re die shrunk higher clocked card like happened with the 8xxx to 9xxx series. I'm hoping for New card though because nvidia makes some good stuff (so long as they dont give us crappy componets like the 8xxx series heat stress issues)

Will the 4870s appear in a sub 1500 dollar notebook. i doubt it, but for single card options you could probably get one in the 1400-1800 dollar range.

The high end sub 1500 dollar range will probably get 4860 or 4850 class cards, which will still be an amazing improvement over whats currently available. On top of which Nehelem CPU's and tri channel RAM slots; late 2009 will be a major upgrade to laptop computing. IMO the largest one we've had in quite a while

..and I want all this in a 6 pound 14" laptop! I'm thinking Toshiba should have put luggage wheels on one end with a retractable handle on the other?

I cant imagine the 4870 notebook version being that much faster than the 4850. I mean, from the desktop end, the 4870 doesn't benefit much from the GDDR5 until you hit 1920x1200 or higher. And even then it's not much in most games. The 4850 seems to be downclocked enough that I'll bet it's 10-15% faster than the 9800GTS though. It just depends on whether the game is shader intensive or not.

Ah, I see! Thankyou for your help! That being said, I decided to get a P-7801 until the new ATI cards begin appearing in laptops for a comparable price! The 7808u uses the same card anyway, and it probably won't even be out for another month or more! By the time, that happens, I figure I'll have gotten a solid year or two out of my new lappy :p. I'm quite sure the ATIs will stomp the 9xxx series! But I still think 256 bit @ 1024 is a very nice range to handle just about any game that's out there! (at least at mid settings) That doesn't stop me from second-guessing my purchase , though! 1.8times is a LOT! I'm guessing the GPUs can't be changed in any of the p-78xx series, right?

What do you think...was it a good purchase? I suppose only time will tell...

How much faster than the 9800GTS do you suppose the single cards are? (4850,60) And I agree end of 09 it'll be a MAJOR update...I guess the question is whether it'll be an affordable one by the time it drops? :p Cuz as per now...that shtuff is HIGH DOLLAR!!

yeah the 7801 is a great laptop; the gateway FX line has always been the best bang for your gaming buck in laptop land ever since the 6831 same out. I doubt that will ever much change. You can go WAY higher end, but dollar for dollar you cant really beat the FX line up.

And no theres no upgrading the GPU's gateway still purchases motherboards that require the GPU to be soldered onto the board... no MXM goodies for us :(

Best guess... 30ish precent. Maybe a bit more maybe a bit less. Its will be about the same for the nVidia next gen cards (2xx level at least) Its the battle of the high end GPU's that are bringing the most attention (4870 vs 260)

But yeah 2009 is going to be a nice year for laptops i think. I just cant deside if i want a new lappy when nehelam first comes out or wait until the die shrink for the possibility of an even higher clocked extreme CPU (which is basically saying i might leave gateway due to the nonexistant Overclockability of the CPU, but i hope not)

Yeah the high end stuff does come with a pretty high premium. Thats why i love the gateway, because you get enough power to do most everything you want and at a really good price point.

The Mobility 3870 is neck to neck with the 9800M GTX?
If you want to get a price/performance laptop, check out the MSI GT 725. Mobility 4850 and a decent processor for 1299. It's still on pre-order with Amazon though.

If you check out the MSI forums, you will also notice that the performance of the 4850 is still somewhat behind the 9800M GTX (about 15% on FC2). This however, may be a driver issue and I wouldn't be surprised to see improved performance from the 4850.

    pretty much.
E-wrecked is getting 16,626 with his crossfire 3870's and johnksss is getting 16,851 with his sli 9800GTX's. All in all not much of a difference

Oh the other hand that is using 3dmark06. In vantage SLI has a distinct advantage over crossfire. I'm not sure if its driver issues, or the extra 1gb of VRAM, or just that nVidia is simply a stronger card. I guess time and the crazy benchmarkers will tell us in the end.

Ah, I wasn't referring to 3dmark06, but in game performance. 3dmark06 isn't exactly the best clue-in for actual performance.

As far as I can tell, the 3870s still lag behind the 9800M GTX for in-game performance. They're excellent cards, and the performance of the new 4850 is even more impressive.

I wish 3d benchmarks would just go away. Let see FPS with real games, optimized or not, like Crysis at max settings. This games still drags most mobile GPU's down to low 20's. How about S.T.A.L.K.E.R.: Clear Sky; maxed?

I don't know if these will ever be set up for proper SLI use, just thinking of difficult games to run on my single GPU.

i heard you can get $250 discount if you buy that $2000 toshiba laptop with 9800m gts sli from toshibadirect.com
of course, screen resolution is 1680x1050 but who cares? that's good enough for 17 inches. if you think about it even most 22 inch desktop lcd screens are 1680x1050 resolution and only 24inches or up has 1920x1200 or higher resolution. $1750 for 9800m gts sli sounds best deal out there right now.
rest of specs are same as 7805u minus resolution..
but oh, well.. i think i will just wait out 1 year and get gtx 200 series + quad
core cpu model when it comes out next year or possibly 4th quarter of this year. =)

That is fair enough. But its always been a give take there. As even in game preformance will differ according to the cards and games. Some games are just naturally more suited to nVidia cards/drivers and some are more suited to ATI cards/drivers (though less games appear in the second catagory)

ATI's downfall i've always felt were its drivers. And in the mobile department if it wasnt for 3rd parties like DOX making superior drivers then nVidia wouldnt be doing as well as it is in the mobile GPU department

Thats why i'm always a supporter of more powerful single cards over SLI/Crossfire set ups. EVERYTHING runs with a single card, and somethings take alot of work (or isnt even possible) for dual card set ups to work.

As to computer benchmarks vs real life results. There will always be some discrepency in that. But the benchmarks are an easy way to get a baseline on preformance. As the benchmarks improve so will their ability to accuratly show real world preformance. Thats why Vantage was a pretty big step up from 3dm06. And what evers next will be a large improvement over that.
