The speakers are slowly degrading in sound quality and so I was thinking,
instead of simply buying a replacement, if I could actually upgrade them to
    better ones from another brand!

    Any ideas?

The first step would be to measure the impedance of the speakers already in there to begin with. When looking for new ones, you will want to match the impedance anyway. Then the next step would be looking for a way to modify the existing housing to insert new ones in there. Maybe some small desktop speakers or iPod docking station style speakers.

Lots of variables to think about. You might want to create a harness first so that you can test to see how they sound before going to the trouble of installing them in the existing housings.

It might be easier to just buy a external sound card that plugs into your USB port. And buy some powered speakers. They will sound a whole lot better than those tinny laptop speakers.
