    is the Gateway P-7811 FX 5.1 capable

    the 6831 and 171 fx have only a 2 channel audio capability
    is the new 7811 different

    No it isn't, if you want 5.1 go with an external sound card. I have one made by GWC for it. The only problem is that I cannot get it to work for Blu-ray while having the monitor connected via HDMI

    Can it not do 5.1 optical mini-toslink through the headphone socket like the 6831/60?

    if you get your hdmi through a 5.1reciever i am sure you will be able to break it into 5.1. no personal experience just from reading around.

    yes through the hdmi, but most people do not have their laptops hooked up through their receivers

    Have you verified that this works on a 6860? Would love to find out of anyone has done this to send toslink to home theater reciever.

    I tested the 7811 through HDMI to my home theater system. It does indeed pass 5.1 and 6.1 to the receiver just fine. I did not have an optical cable handy, so I could not test that interface.
