O.K. im a newb at this so bare with me. I just bought this computer because it seemed to be the best deal. Can i upgrade the centrino with the core duo extreme and can i get some help or a dummy guide to undervolting and overclocking if that is not possible. I tried to play crysis and the recommended settings were all on low and no antialiasing. It ran ok but i was expecting a lil less hang up on the machine. I know you get what you pay for but it seemed like the right deal. I got it from bestbuy. so was it really the best deal there or should i have gone for the cheaper and smaller asus

Read the recent threads on the forum. Second, it is the best gaming laptop under $1800. Third, go to youtube and search "Crysis gateway FX" and you'll see a few videos on users playing at 1440x900 at med-high settings without any problems.

Also, "out of the box" -

shutdown or delete those background programs that you don't need running while gaming,

in Nvidia Control Panel, "adjust image settings with Preview", set to "performance",

    and

in Control Panel, Power Options make sure you are set to "high performance" when running on AC power.

That last one makes a noticeable difference.

thanx guys keep em coming. Will updating drivers and overclocking void the warranty.. i have no more money to get an extended warranty. but i will do. if i update will it overheat anything because the crysis demo on low settings was blowing out some very warm heat and it was well ventilated. Once again i know that crysis wont run perfectly i just wanted to tune this thing sort of speak and put it through its paces thats all. And thanx again!! :)

I can't remember all of them.

I uninstalled Adobe Reader and replaced it with Foxit Reader, link below, and uninstalled the Anti-Virus/Security Suite that is bundled with it and replaced it with PC Tools Firewall and AVG anti-virus (below, also.)

Also installed Secunia Personal Security Inspector and Firefox Web Browser.

Deleted the Earthlink/Netzero/AOL stuff, too, just to get the HD space back.

    Secunia Personal Security Inspector:

Foxit Reader 3.0 (use in place of Adobe Reader for PDFs):

    AVG (Free) Anti-Virus:

    Firefox web browser:

    PC Tools Firewall Plus:

If you have a question about anything specific, just ask and one of us will help.

Oops - I didn't have my FX on and forgot about that.

I'm using PC Tools on my Vista desktop PC and on the Gateway FX the firewall that is included in Vista since I'm also behind a firewall/router.

Oh, also remove the MS Office Trial stuff, if it's installed. (Again, can't recall.)

I also created a second User - "Gamer" - and use it for off-line gaming. I disconnect the Network cable, and don't need the Anti-Virus program running in background or any other unnecessary programs not needed for the games.

I have no problems running Secunia PSI on either PC. Not sure what your problem is with it.

Are you running the on-line Secunia or did you download it and install it on your PC?

    Re-boot.

If you attempted to install PC Tools firewall, try to uninstall it.

I'm assuming you uninstalled the other AV/security program before you installed AVG?

    Yes.

However, make sure you have the current versions of both.

Remove/uninstall any older versions of Java.

A lot of programs, including most of MS Office, is considered a potential threat. The best one can do is have all of the current patches/updates.

    That is what I'm using,

although some have downloaded the free

    Comodo Personal Firewall.

Just make sure you get the version for 64bit Vista.
