I've owned a gateway mx6440 since may 2006 and it's been working great, however this past week i noticed my "a" key is unresponsive at times, i need to press harder on it in order to elicit an "a" onscreen.

the weird part is that sometimes when I'm typing fast it will pick up the a right away, but most times i have to press hard. how can i fix this problem? the key doesn't feel different from the others, too.

You will probably have to replace the keyboard as this seems like a hardware issue more than software.

you might check for crumbs/lint/dust or any other foreign objects that might be trapped underneath the "A" key.
