m series? problem, black screen after log in, error.

This is my god sons family latop. I dnt knw anything about gatways. This is the first time trouble shooting/repairing vista.. couple weeks back they tried to install norton 360.. that's all they told me.. no idea what kind of comp it is, m series shows on one spot. Found
Bios version. 96.04
Intel (R) pentium (R) dual T3200
2000 mhz. Cache ram 1024kb.
Running vista home primium

After boot up and log in to either main acct (where I can get tskmang to show) or other acct (which doesn't bring up taskmang off. Ctrl,alt,del) just have a black screen with this error message:
16 bit ms-dos subsystem
C:\windows\system32\winlog~1.exe
The NTVDM CPU has encountered an illegal instruction.
CS:11fc IP:4b60 OP:ff ff 00 00 00 choose close to terminate the application

I found out u can't change anything thrgh the main acct once I get in tskmng and cmd. Searched and tried the; net user administrator/active:yes I still can't log in as an admin..

I tried startup repair, system restore (only point shows is from 2-13-10) and memory diagnostic tool.. nothing works.. and of course they can't find the original cd..

Black screen comes back after every bootup.. fixes I found aren temp only even thgh they say its a permanent fix..
