    hi guys,

new to the forums here but thought it would be my best bet to pick the brains of some people before i go and shell out money to get it fixed. im a computer aficionado having troubleshooted and built them since i was about 12. the trouble is with my entry level Gateway MD2614u. the battery cracked after being dropped a year ago so i started using it on the charger. this has worked fine for about a year and a half now, but i just recieved a replacement battery (not OEM the actual brand) and put it in and now it will not turn on with the battery in. when i press the power button the charging light blinks red a few times and then goes dormant. when i take out the battery the computer also does not work. this laptop is quite essential for my work here overseas so i was hoping someone had an idea of what happened, because i searched google with no success with the specific brand or gateway computers in general. any ideas would be most appreciated

I had a laptop once that had a similar issue. What it turned out to be was the CMOS switch acted like a breaker switch and the battery basically short circuited and I couldn't get the laptop to turn on. I removed the battery and held the CMOS switch down for 20 seconds and it worked again, but as soon as I put the battery back in same story. So you could try that, perhaps they gave you a bad battery?

Well there is still the chance that the battery is good but caused the switch to go off. Anyway you'll have to look that up it depends on the laptop and I unfortunately don't have that laptop. Also there may be no switch and instead you can try pulling both the battery and CMOS battery for a minute.
