Why was this laptop only made for 2 months if it is such a great unit,?
I noticed it was made in August and Sept. with the lingering units almost depleted from the stores currently.
Is this normal for Gateway as I thought most companies introduce a laptop and keep it around for a year or so.

Only Gateway knows the answer for sure to your question. We can speculate, though. Could have been reliability problems with the design or also could have been that Gateway wasn't making any money on it with their pricing. Could also be a replacement model coming.
-
maybe newegg offered them more than bestbuy for the rights to the barebones and they took it over... and jacked the price!!!
-
Gateway went through at least 4 models in the last year, so it is not surprising that they took it off the shelves. It usually means a newer, better version will be coming out.

This is a purely speculative answer, since as someone said, only Gateway knows the answer.
Gateway just came out with the P-7801u, which is a slightly tweaked 7811 for a much higher price. Give that point, it's probably that Gateway stopped 7811 production because sales of the 7811 were so successful, and like any business with money on the mind, decided that since these sales were so successful, they could increase the price, but not without justifying it with a difference in item to go with the different price. And so, to maximize the profit on this new price increase, the difference that they would make in the new unit should be as little (and therefor as less-costly) as possible.
Intel does it all the time. Every month or so they put out a new "upgraded" chip with "new technology" for $200 more than the previous model when the two models are only very slightly different. -
That would suck, too, b/c the whole draw of this thing was the price
erformance ratio... =(

this is kinda fun getting double the posts with two threads having same conversation =)

Yeah I've noticed that recently - what's that all about?!
Three going about hard drives! -
Mine is 5 days old now and the verdict is not in yet on Vista, nice display with great color rendering, so far so good with no issues
-
i dont think they'll make another deal as good as the 7811 anytime soon!
((((((((((

Everyone keep stelling me how great of a deal I got, I am so not into the pricing thing so I just thought the price was normal not some huge sale.
So far I do like it, the display is great. -
If that car is in his driveway, then i dont think he cares about the laptop.
I know i wouldnt lol. VRROOOM VROOM!
the only time i would use my 7811fx if i had an 08gt500kr... would be if i had to... .... ummm... honestly don't know. guess thats how it will be when i get my bike. -
Well.. At least the car can't help you do taxes..
-
It'll get him from kitty kat#1 to kitty kat #468 in a heartbeat.
-
the car has 61 miles on it but yes I do love it even though it was pricey and a pain in the butt to get at msrp.
-
In my opinion, the 7801u from NewEgg is nowhere as good as the P7811-FX. Right now, the best price/performance laptop would be the Asus G50-VT @ Best Buy.

Yeah, Gateway definitely shook up the price point for a real gaming notebook and hopefully other manufacturers will continue to take notice.
These things run great. Just wished they offered a 1440x900 or 1680x1050 option. -
