any suggestions before looking for service
-
update
boot into safe mode OK
screen same like above
gpu is dead ? -
Yeah I'd say your GPU is fried. Was it getting too hot when you were using it - did you clean the vents so they were free of dirt and dust etc?
-
wow that sux
-
no reason in the world.
as clean as a baby ass.
i always monitor temps while gaming.
never exceeded 70c.
removed nvidia driver can log on to vista
100% gpu
the bummer is that i am abroad.
who should i talk to Best Buy or Gateway ? -
Did you ever OC the VGA? I never saw a GPU behave like this...maybe just after OC or after damaging the GPU itself physically...
-
strange indeed
no pixelazation in games ? -
it could just be your video cable isnt plugged in to the lcd good...... would mean you would have to take the screen apart.
but since it's under warranty...take back and have them fix it. if under 30 days...i think you can still exchange it. -
Loose cable wouldn't explain crashes though...
-
cant be cable
vista crashing with display driver
logging in without -
... what he said
also couldnt get a signal on external display.
the log with gateway support is copyright material
i think i'll be putting it on ebay. -
ok, loose cable was giving him hope that it was something simple.
you can try to invoke the second display by hitting fn+f4 a few times.
and it's not a video driver, because his video is corrupted in bios.
so it's one of two things...gpu or cable. -
the fn+f4 didnt do anything beside darken the laptop display, no signal.
gpu 100%
under the vga properties it says total available graphic memory 14MB
the reason i can log in with the vga driver, is that it doesnt support 3d, so aero doesnt kick in and crash the OS. (???)
the strange thing it happen while the computer was idle, i thought maybe the fan, but its spining just fine.
no problems in games, no overheating nothing to suggest this calamity.
oh well, just get it replaced.
-
does the bios still come up doubled screened like that?
-
surprise
been away for few hours, the display is not splited anymore, however i get many discolored pixels, coming and going like sparkling stars.
still using vga 800x600 any one know how to disable aero from safe mode ? -
Try disabling the 'Themes' service.
-
-
As John said. This is just like my old 9600 when it died. Maybe, just maybe BB will swap you out to FX6860. The GPU is soldered so I would ask about the turnaround if they want to send it in. Gateway direct should be about 8 days, mail it on Friday if you go this route.
Good Luck, let us know what happens. -
I agree, just take it in, your spending too much time, you could be out surfing, or bull riding.
-
lol... now me....i would have taken it apart already...being nosey. well the screen anyway...lol. and if that didn't work...put it back together and took it down to best buy and got another one.
-
I like to break..hmm take things apart too. It is the inter nerd... child in me.
-
yes, indeed!
a guy thing -
awww, fawn memories of taking my first laptop apart, all the screws, little ribbon cables that attach in a weird loose way. I only ended up with three extra screws
-
its already more than 2 months old, you guys think Best Buy will replace it ?
i thought its in gateway hands now...
i am currently abroad so thats the reaon i am little experimenting with it.
however so far i resist the dark side call, but the screwdriver is right here...
it is cold against my hand...
any nvidia driver causes it to hang on login, regrdless of the themes service on or off and other regisrty hacks i found that disable aero.
the only question is best buy or gateway ? -
I would call Gateway and get their opinion. You may have an option to mail it, insured. At least you can get a jump on repairs. Hopefully you have family state side for shipping return address?
cheers -
-
I'm like take it apart if your comfortable with it. This might help you get started if you don't already have it.

i don't say its driver issues, i say the GPU is damaged in a way that when the nvidia driver try to access anything more advanced than basic VGA capabilities it causes a system crash. cable problems don't lead to system crash when u try to kick in 3D. it leads to dis-colorization in all modes, no crashes.
actually after playing with the registry in safe mode, i am running at 1440x900 the driver is vgasave and it is marked yellow (device manager) as to conflicts :
Input/Output Range 03B0 - 03BB used by:
Mobile Intel(R) PM965/GM965/GL960 Express PCI Express Root Port - 2A01
Input/Output Range 03C0 - 03DF used by:

Memory Range 000A0000 - 000BFFFF used by:

no aero of course and still blinking pixels sprayed over the display.
no doubt it should be serviced, and noi am not taking it apart.
even though i would have truly enjoyed it.
the first laptop i took apart did leave me with quite a few redundant screwsbut that was long after its free service days were gone.
-
ok..all this stuff is just advice and not fact. advice or things that you can try.
so i think your missunderstanding me.
and back when we said send it in, really meant..send it in, since your not going to be taking it apart. now your over there tinkering with it and hoping it's going to fix itself. or did you not buy a warranty? or did you over clock and fry the gpu?
now key word advice!
do a factory reinstall and see if it works.takes about an hour and you will know for sure if you toasted your lappy or was it just user error. -
i know it wont fix it self, regeneration is not what GPU are best known for.
still it is interesting to see how it started with a split screen in bios and no way to boot into the OS, now its 1440x900 vista happy. i enjoyed that "tinkering".
from reading your posts i think you can understand that.
anyway, it will be sent in soon.
and thank you, i will do a factory reinstall once i get enough DVDs to backup my stuff. -
do you have an extra hard drive?
edit: you also have to realize that im just trying to help, because i ahve been in those situations before and if it wern't for someone giving me a clue or too..i would have never figured out things..way back when. some times we dont always see what could be right infront of us. cant be trying to kill the messenger. lol
and yes, i understand tinkering...boy do i ever!!
lol
p-6381 fried ?
