I'm vaguely considering upgrading my CPU, but I'm wondering about longevity. Ideally I'd like to wait as long as I can, but I fear if I wait the 8800 GTS will no longer be a good graphics card to complement said upgrade. With the exception of GTA IV the T5450 has been more than adequate for gaming, and I'd ideally like to wait for a mobile quad core, however I don't now if that'll even happen for the 6831.

I'm also unsure whether to go with a Core 2 Duo CPU or a Core 2 Extreme.

    Any thoughts?

the 68xx series will never get a mobile quad. We're pretty much limited to the t8300,t9300,x7800,x9000 for upgrade purposes. (there are others but they basically suck)

If you think your t5450 has been adequate then upgrading to even the t8300 will make you machine run at a night and day difference.

As to whether to go C2D or C2X thats really up to you. A t8300/t9300 is usually more than enough for most people, and greatly improves their machines usability. The t9300 and the x7800 can be had for about the same price and if your lucky you can get 3.0gHz out of the x7800, but most appear to get 2.8gHz due to our cooling system. The x9000 is the big dog of the group, giving you the best at all points (with the exception of heat generated and power used) Its also the most expensive though. So you just have to weight your budget vs preformance gains

Thanks, that was very helpful and constructive. I have a lead on a good price for a t9300, but I'm not in Europe for a bit and have lots of things to potentially spend money on.

I had previously been following threads about quadcore on FX laptops, but I'm unclear how the decision was made that the P-6831FX won't support quadcore...
