okay, first off, to settle any questions, i did use the search function...

now, i recently have had an issue playing games (inlcuding wow) where my fps will drop from 60 (vsync) to 1.4 in 25 man raids, this occurs every five-fifteen minutes, though more random, and the fps drop remains for anywhere from 30 seconds to 1.5 minutes

heres what ive done to fix the issue:
    -reinstall windows 7
-downgrade to 176 nvidia drivers, and also upgrade to 196, and have tested some random ones in the middle
-reset the router, forward dmz, update the firmware, run network utilities to 'enable stream mode'
    -update the laptop mobo drivers
-use random programs to reduce fps issues
-watch the temps of the gpu (anywhere from 45ish to 90)
-turn off all addons, and turn down all settings, and reinstall wow, and mw2

so heres the deal, reading some threads, ive seen that if the temp gets too high, the gpu downclocks itself, and i think thats the issue, because the lag spike, doesnt start until the temp starts to drop radically

i raised the laptop up on a book, and have used a can of air for the vents...

    so, any ideas?

Do not do any of this again:
    -reinstall windows 7
-downgrade to 176 nvidia drivers, and also upgrade to 196, and have tested some random ones in the middle(just run the latest one from Nvidia's website for windows 7. It should uninstall previous drivers and be just fine.
-reset the router, forward dmz, update the firmware, run network utilities to 'enable stream mode'
    -update the laptop mobo drivers
-use random programs to reduce fps issues

This is the only good thing you did in my opinion:
-watch the temps of the gpu (anywhere from 45ish to 90)

90C is way too hot. This isn't an asus laptop. You have a good cooling system which leads me to believe you are doing something incorrect with your laptop like overclocking without knowledge of it or possibly you have a hardware issue with the internal cooling system.

-turn off all addons, and turn down all settings, and reinstall wow, and mw2
don't worry about the addons. It's not the addons.

My temperatures never get past 60C. If you go higher than that you either have crap stuck inside the laptop not allowing it to cool correctly. You aren't elevating the laptop in the back like you should or you are blocking the cooling ports. You may have to physically open the computer and get rid of the dust that has built up inside the area around the fans. Make sure the fan is working. You should hear it when it kicks in during play.

If you have any kind of changes to the nvidia card clock speeds you need to get rid of the overclock completely. Turn that off.

pwrtoppl, my cousin has been having this exact same problem. We have done many of the things you have and have recently been monitoring the gpu temp. It does seem extremely high 90C+...

    Did anything xarthos say work?

I am thinking that crap might be stuck in the fans (dog hair, dust, etc) OR the fan isn't working properly.

Can anyone else shine some light on this situation?

    Any help is greatly appreciated.

    Nevermind :)

I have read the disassembly thread and am going to put some new TIM on the HS. Also going to clean out the fans. I just quickly cleaned out the cpu and memory HS/fan and there was a mound of dust and junk in there.

I am fairly confident that this is the problem.

Hey! I'm new to this forum, and joined specifically because I have the exact same problem! My temps go up over 100C when playing Mass Effect... Let me know if reapplying the thermal compound works, I've been considering doing so myself, however I'm no tech savvy and may need help (a simple guide of some sort). Thanks!

EDIT: I've had the laptop for over a year and have been using it for gaming, only recently have I realized that the temperatures were this bad, I thought it was a normal temperatures, I'm just hoping I haven't damaged anything.

Thanks, Bodin, I'll be sure to bookmark that.
Can someone with the same issue tell me the difference after putting on TIM and cleaning out the dust, because if it isn't big enough I don't think ill bother. If I want to get it repaired by Gateway I think I'll have to pay since I'm out of warranty... :/.

    @pistolshrimp

Keep in mind that I am using Speedfan to monitor the temps. I have read that Speedfan isn't always the most accurate but it is all relative since I've always used this program.

Anyways, idle temp pre-disassembly, cleaning, and new TIM
58C to 70C.... I would say the average idle temp was about 64C

    Post-disassembly idle temp
    45C to 50C

    under load temp pre
    90C to 115C

    under loan temp post
80C is the average temp reading when I was playing SC2 Beta on Ultra settings. Other games the temp ranges from 70C to 80C.

Keep in mind that I cleaned out the vents and this really needed to be done. There was a wall of dust and debris between the HS and fans. ALSO the brand of thermal paste I used likely wasn't the greatest. I wasn't patient enough to wait for the IC Diamond from NCIX so I bought a brand called Nexxtech which to be honest I think isn't that good. I am going to order IC Diamond in the near future.

Good luck on the disassembly. One thing to note: the instructions on how to remove the keyboard ribbon from the motherboard were kind of misleading in my opinion. To add to that description: the clip acts like a hinge.

EDIT: I would advise at getting a name brand thermal paste IC Diamond or Artic Silver etc... I think the no name brand stuff is already breaking down.

Alright, sounds great! It seems a lot of 7805u's turn out to have the same problem, did you happen to buy yours refurbished? I did, and it seems they might have forgotten to put on the TIM and maybe even cleaning the fans out too.

Either way, thanks a lot, I'll be sure to get some ICD7.

Oh and one more thing, did you apply the TIM to the GPU or CPU? Or both?

Yes, got it refurbished. Seems like so many high end parts and not enough air flow which causes dust, dog hair, and junk to build up.

I put new TIM on the CPU, GPU, and GPU memory chips. There isn't any stock TIM on the memory chips. I left the TIM pad on the Northbridge as mentioned in the guide.
